From the heat of the BBQ to the smoking hot talent of Justin Jay, as he returns to the feathery fold with his latest release. The youngest of VonStroke's proteges, the 22 year old producer continues to build on the promise shown on a string of heavy hitting Dirtybird releases (Femme Fatale, Static, Instincts, Le Voyou.)  With all of his tracks created on the same college-dorm studio set up, it seems fitting that we bring you the last from those late night bunker sessions and a brace dedicated to the end of his studies and the start of the party.

'Mom I Graduated' launches in to life with the sassily titled ‘Hit It.’  Spring loaded beats adorn an eerie, vocoder-aided atmosphere, before double claps on the beat turn the track into an intensified stomper. The drop descends into thick sub bass, chopped up vocal samples and chiming, echoing percussion around its half time rhythm. This is big!!

Rain Dance starts life out of earshot.  A progressive melodic flurry gradually enters in to range through a mist of pitter patter FX touches, while ascending woodblocks bring us to the vocal drop and a thumping kick drum -“I’m gonna make it rain” - Booty aesthetics with a slowed tribal rhythm and swathes of sub bass leak through the speakers. A second summer anthem from the young Californian.

Who remembers Fidget? I felt like doing a little throwback mixtape from around 2008 where ‘Fidget’, or however you’d like to name it, was at it’s peak… It was around this time when guys like Crookers and Switch really switched up the game (pun alert) This music was rebellious and unpredictable, and the unwritten rules of dance music that ever existed before were basically given the middle finger. The cliche was that there were no cliches. Everyone was making weird and experimental sounds. Sometimes I miss these days, where today a lot of music is ‘textbook’, polished and smooth. Back then was a special time for me because I was just starting out to tour internationally. I had two tracks crowned ‘essential new tune’ on BBC radio 1, and suddenly I found myself in the UK or somewhere in Europe every weekend playing all kinds of parties that were all just as crazy as the music! I hope you enjoy the mix as much as I do! If you like the idea, please let me know and I’ll dig a little deeper to post these throwback mixes more often…

While the house music scene in North America continues to be dominated by heavy-hitters, those who are rising through the ranks are the ones who are truly driving the genre forward with new styles and influences. And that’s exactly what Toronto-based artist Mikey Palermo has set off to do with his unique style that can be heard throughout his hypnotic originals and remixes over the past few years.

Initially toying with chiptune sounds, Mikey Palermo explored a range of experimental genres before diving into the house music realm to release beats under his given name. Since then, he’s been delivering some absolutely fantastic jams like “Party People” with NAHTE on Groovy Bone and a remix of Fleetwood Mac‘s “The Chain” that will have anyone vibing out on their makeshift dancefloor.

Most recently, he landed a fresh track called “What’s Poppin'” on Nightenjin that puts his tech-house stylings front and center for a booty-shakin’, feet movin’ experience that’s well worth the listen. Looking to gain some insight on the release and dig deep into his own influences, we caught up with Mikey for a chat and he spun a fantastic mix to keep everyone grooving to the beat as well, check it out!
