Few people can claim to have had the influence of electronic music that Stanton Warriors have. For starters no less than two of our current writing team were first inspired to take to the decks and learn to mix after seeing them DJ. Oh and the likes of Disclosure and co. cite them as a major influence too. Even Vice magazine doesn’t have anything bad to say about them or their “brilliant bass music.”

Yes, since bursting onto the scene with their multi award-winning compilation “The Stanton Sessions” back in 2001, the Stanton Warriors’ irresistible and inimitable sound has consistently remained the soundtrack to some of the world’s biggest and best parties over the past thirteen years; from East London warehouses, Miami boat parties and illegal Detroit raves, to the stages of Glastonbury, Exit, Burning Man, Ultra and Coachella, selling out global tours and topping DJ lists along the way. 

In the studio, Bristol’s Mark Yardley and Dominic Butler have honed a trademark, uncategorisable sound that is at once all their own, but also utterly indefinable, leading to high-profile releases on XL Records, Fabric, Cheap Thrills, Central Station and Universal, alongside official remixes for everyone from Daft Punk and Fatboy Slim, to MIA and Gorillaz. With such an illustrious back catalogue how could we be anything other than admirers?

So as fans as well as journalists we were naturally excited to secure their considerable talents for an exclusive mix as part of our mix of the day series. The motivation behind undertaking the mix? Celebration. To mark their return to Vauxhall for another massive Stanton Session at Fire this time alongside Scratch Perverts and Cause & Effect.

Oh and then there is a little thing this summer that we think is worth shouting about. Actually it’s not that little and it’s definitely worth SHOUTING about. Iconic rave brand Dreamscape is returning for a big reunion this summer at the MK Bowl and guess who’ve they’ve got as one of the headliners? That’s right Stanton Warriors. iBreaks Bass is all about forward-thinking breakbeat with a futuristic bass music edge, and our next release hits that particular sweet spot with pinpoint accuracy. East-London-based producer Jurassik has dropped a double-header that perfectly embodies a broken beat take on the fresh UK 140bpm vibe: a little bit of dubstep, a lick of garage and most importantly, a healthy dose of low end and some seriously fierce riddim to make the place go off. This is breakbeat for 2012, not 2002.

First up, Microphone has echoes of 138 Trek-era Zinc and that whole period where two-step met breakbeat, now enjoying a new lease of life in the dubstep era. A tight, funky-assed break sits under a barrage of tough bass, while sirens nice up the party and snatches of soulful vocal echo through the mix. Next we have AA-side Where It's At, which takes matters in a deep and moody 808-fuelled direction, sending tough pitched hip-hop style vocals over grimy bass and inspired electro percussion.

This is a side of the 140 breakbeat movement which goes beyond simply recycling the currently red-hot amen break-fuelled "future jungle" sound and dares to delve into pastures new. Both tracks have had bodies flying around the room at Jurassik's UK and European dates, and we'd be very surprised indeed if they don't do the same for you on a dancefloor somewhere very soon.
