The prolific MC, producer and musician Oddisee’s new album ‘The Iceberg’ is a plea for humanity to dig deeper in search of understanding and common ground.  His third release in just 12 months, ‘The Iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us.  Deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, Go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement.  ‘The Iceberg’ is out February 24 on Mello Music Group.

Lead single “Things” acts as a mission statement for the album, a deep dance groove with lightning-quick lyrics about “things” he’s going through.  Says Oddisee, “"We all go through the trials & tribulations of life. Why is it we feel the need to individualize our shared experiences? If only we could see our concerns as others do, maybe they wouldn't be so serious."

Wise Intelligent is one of the original founders of Conscious Hiphop, on the mantle alongside of Public Enemy, Mos Def & Lauryn Hill.  As a founding member of the classic group Poor Righteous Teachers, he landed a gold album with his debut and ended up selling 2 million plus records between 1989-1996. Add to that being named Top 50 most-slept on emcees of all-time by Complex magazine, a Top 100 Albums of All-Time placement by The Source, and a #5 most-underrated emcee award from About.com and you have the understanding of where many of today’s emcees styles come from. But more importantly were the terms upon which Wise Intelligent laid his foundation: Principle above profit, community over self.  Wise Intelligent is one of the premiere voices for Black consciousness in music today. 
 
Enter Gensu Dean.  Currently based in Austin, Texas, the analog producer has laid rock solid sonic foundations for everyone from Grammy award winner and friend David Banner to Cali-agent Planet Asia.  Add a host of Hiphop who’s whos like Large Professor, CL Smooth, Ol Dirty Bastard, Roc Marciano, Denmark Vessey, Homeboy Sandman, Diamond D, and to Shady Records signee Conway The Machine into Dean’s production credits and you’ll start to get the picture.  His sound is analog, ranging from MPC3000 to SP1200. Gensu is a one of a kind, back to basics, head nodding, beat making, smash mouth producer with as many chambers as Khufu at Cheops.
 
Now the two legends have teamed up in Atlanta to record a new album together over the past 6 months.  From there Gensu brought the record home to Austin for some preliminary mixing, then flew out to the equally legendary DITC Studios in the Bronx to mix the record with Parks.   After a quick flight back to Texas and sessions with Jimi Bowman at Klearlight studios in Dallas, the masters were complete and a new project ready for the masses: “Game of Death.”
 
Rooted in Universal Science, the album takes dead aim at mediocre, dumbed down, manufactured rap while treating Music as the weapon it is.  This is cultural warfare bridging the gap from Roxanne & Biz Markie to Jay Electronica & Erykah Badu.  Bending time & space, Gensu & Wise take listeners through history with amazingly wide-eyed clarity. With statements as straight-forward as “Your shit aint Hiphop if it’s corporate” there is no missing the message of self-determination.  This is the type of liberation that starts with your mind and is more about what you shed than what you add on. Somebody say Amen.

In November 2015, the Minneapolis duo Bones & Beeker—consisting of singer-songwriter Anthony Newes and producer/multi-instrumentalist BK-One—quietly released a self-titled gem of a debut. Hip-hop producer BK-One (aka Brendan Kelly) had previously spent years on the road as the touring DJ for Rhymesayers MC Brother Ali. So after releasing his own album, BK-One reached out to Ali and other friends to help craft a hip-hop EP out of source material from the Bones & Beeker record.

First onboard was DJ extraordinaire Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5), who is about to drop his own album, Die Cut, and is currently supporting it on a North American tour. On the “World Behind” remix, Cut Chemist channels turntable elders Double Dee & Steinski and offers a funky retake with massive, moving drums.

Minneapolis neighbor and Rhymesayers affiliated rapper P.O.S. steps up to drop a verse on the funky favorite “Each Time I Die.” P.O.S., a Doomtree Collective member, has just dropped his own album, Chill, Dummy, out now on Doomtree.

Minneapolis Afro-futurist collective ZULUZULUU—one of BK-One’s favorite bands—could be considered kindred spirits with Bones & Beeker, as both groups ditch convention and move to the beat of their own drums. ZULUZULUU takes on “Wind-Up Dolls” and starts from scratch, recording their own blissed-out take.

Acclaimed Rhymesayers rapper Brother Ali sprinkles the sauce on the fan-favorite track “Heartbroken in Love”—the original song was recently licensed for the Netflix series Easy.

Coming off his critically acclaimed album, 2017’s Brick Body Kids Still Daydream (Mello Music), Open Mike Eagle blesses the BK-One re-edit of “A Song for Al’s Dead Mother.” A Chicago native and friend of the Doomtree Collective, Open Mike Eagle now resides in Los Angeles as a member of Project Blowed.

Superblack has got the beats. Famed De La Soul producer Prince Paul, rapper/drummer J-Zone, and ego trip cofounder (and man-of-many-talents) Sacha Jenkins joined forces to mess around with music. They remix the B&B single “Lupine,” focusing on the raw drums that ground and move forward the art and culture that is hip-hop.
