In February 2016 Midland made his contribution to the hugely influential BBC Essential Mix series. The end of the mix came in the shape of an unreleased track that would go on to soundtrack dance floors and festivals the world over. That track was 'Final Credits.' Since its creation in the depths of winter to its vinyl release in June, with weekly airings everywhere from Panorama Bar to DC10 to Dekmantel Festival, the record has united dance floors and become one of the most unlikely tracks of the year. As the summer disappeared, calls for a full release of 'Final Credits' have swelled, and now, thanks to The Classic Music Company we're delighted to say this is becoming a reality.

Music for Water Butt, Dog and Theremin (in F minor)

This song starts with the sound of water running off my roof, through the downspout into the water butt. I had taken the dog out into the garden before bedtime (he still cannot use the indoor toilet) and quickly ran back in to get my recorder. As I recorded the sound I noticed it had a fairly repetitive rhythm. A noise startled the dog and he started to join in.

Bringing the sound into Logic caused a few problems. Not only was the water butt not in time but the dog sample was also different. Now, I could have time stretched it into submission but I decided to leave it as it was. As a result there are timing issues as the song goes on but I feel that the nature of the beat holds it all together. I was particularly inspired by Matthew Herbert in this regard. He likes to deal with what he is given. Accidents are encouraged and I agree that it gives a greater level of authenticity and individuality to the piece as a result.

The final Theremin type sound reminded me of the amazing countertenor Phua Ee Kia. I was lucky enough to hear him perform as part of the Teng Ensemble at the Esplanade Recital Studio. His soaring melodies are sublime and the group as a whole are spectacular.
