This suite was commissioned by the late Richard Hand for the Festival di Londra in Ripatransone, Italy in 2006. At the time I had become every interested in progressive rock on the 19.16 time signature of the second movement is a homage to that genre. This is one of the few new works written for the baroque flute the fundamental key of which is D. This restriction means there is a lot of harmonic 'pressure' applied to the flute by the much more chromatic guitar. Richard was a wonderful musician and a warm and generous friend; trained as an electric guitarist initially he was able to apply lots of electric techniques to the classical guitar with (I think) striking effect. The flautist on this recording is Martin Feinstein.

Holocene explores the interplay between multiple tiers of sound while creating a detailed tapestry of sonic nuance that is intricate, earthy and mysterious. Hear the influence of time in the shimmering resonance of bowed and struck cymbals and vocalisation. 

Onyx Brass performs alongside Hammonds Band led by Morgan Griffiths.

Composer Ailís Ní Ríain works broadly in the areas of concert music, music installation, electroacoustic and music­-theatre. Her interdisciplinary approach has led to numerous collaborations with writers, dancers, performers, visual and theatre artists. Her work has been commissioned, performed and broadcast worldwide and she is a recipient of the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Award for Composers.

Ailís is deaf/hard of hearing. 

Onyx Brass has been described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘the classiest brass ensemble in Britain’. Since its establishment the group have been pioneers in advocating the brass quintet as a medium for excellent new chamber music, and have commissioned over 200 new works.

The second movement from a suite for guitar and baroque flute (one of the few pieces written for this instrument in the last 250 years!). The time signature is a progressive rock-influenced 19/8! The performers here are Martin Feinstein (flute) and the late, and much lamented, Richard Hand (guitar).
