“Gömülü Orman” (Buried Forest) is my first string quartet and the fifth piece of my song cycle; “FFG”. The cycle consists of several works that use metaphors and ambient representations to illustrate my journey through composition. “Gömülü Orman” is the story's dark, abysmal, and lively underground section. It explores the themes of megalophobia, isolation, alternative realities, nature, acceptance, and most importantly, mass exploration.

"Gömülü Orman" represents a vast landscape of exploration for me. The entire composition is built around microtonality (24TET), where I explore various techniques of employing microtonal structures, ranging from functional and extended harmony to scale-based systems. The piece also emphasizes timbral composition and spectral qualities. With its odd, unconventional tonal space, I seek to create a unique, rich auditory experience.

Chromatic MVMNT 2

"Stranger of Kin", inspired by my grandmother's Alzheimer's disease, which progressively worsened over the course of nine years, explores the complex emotions that arise when a loved one experiences memory loss. Our interactions are a mix of love, sadness at her moments of forgetfulness, and frustration when the same questions, like "who are you?", repeat. There are brief moments of joy, too, as she recalls a childhood memory of when she helped raise me like a second mother. But these precious moments are fleeting, and the cycle of confusion and questioning begins anew.  

At the same time, I imagine my grandmother feels fear and disorientation when she doesn't recognize her surroundings or the people around her. It must be a disorienting whirlwind for her, forced to rely on the explanations of a stranger (me) to understand her reality. However, when a fragment of memory returns, there's a bittersweet acceptance for both of us. We accept that the situation is beyond our control, and all we can offer each other is love, sympathy, and cherishing these precious moments while they last. 

The music seeks to capture such complex emotions surrounding my interactions with my grandmother in a cyclical fashion. Each cycle presents the same musical material but each time in a different character, color, and/or textures and eventually is interrupted by a dreamy but abrupt cloud of sound that resets the memory and gives way to a new cycle. In the beginning, solo violin harmonics and bowed vibraphone play the first theme, gradually evolving into fragments of a new, but still related, theme. 

This second theme, inspired by Persian folk tunes, is scattered throughout the piece in fragments, echoing the nostalgia of my grandmother and the memories of her raising me in Iran. It is a tribute to the loving angel who was my grandmother, and only emerges in its entirety halfway through the piece, played by solo violin, and later culminates in a powerful climax in the final cycle. The piece concludes with a variation of the second theme followed by the recurring dream-like sound cloud, marking the end of the cycle.  

~ I would like to dedicate this piece to my grandmother, Tahereh Moeini, who passed away shortly after composing the original mixed-ensemble version of this piece on August 5th, 2024. ~

Since I barely squeaked by into round 2 of the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch this year, I figured let's do something wild.

This is the first time I've tried to write a "true" jazz piece - something along the lines of the pop jazz artists of the 2010s (Roy Hargrove, Soil & PIMP Sessions, J.A.M., etc). Think a fast-paced downtown jazz scene with trains and busses running at full-tilt. I'm a huge fan of upbeat rhythmic jazz and making this was a ton of fun.

Forget the myths. The influence of sound on plant life isn't magic—it's physics. As a bio-acoustic researcher, I've dedicated my career to decoding the precise vibrational mechanics that stimulate plant development. In this investigation, we move beyond popular culture to explore the specific, measurable effects of sound waves, focusing on why the structured acoustic patterns of Classical-era string quartets (e.g., Haydn, Mozart) are uniquely effective.

This is not about a plant's "taste" in music. It's about mechanoreception. Plants are exquisitely sensitive to physical stimuli. Their cellular structures contain mechanosensitive ion channels that respond to pressure and vibration. We will explore how:

Harmonic Frequencies Stimulate Cytoplasmic Streaming: The consistent, harmonically rich frequencies produced by violins, violas, and cellos (ranging from approximately 196 Hz to over 4 kHz) create a stable vibrational field. This gentle agitation is hypothesized to enhance cytoplasmic streaming—the movement of fluid within the plant's cells. Improved streaming leads to more efficient transport of nutrients and organelles, optimizing metabolic function.

Rhythmic Pulses Influence Stomatal Conductance: The predictable, moderate rhythmic patterns of a Haydn-esque quartet create periodic pressure waves in the air. Emerging studies suggest that specific frequencies (in the 1-2 kHz range) can influence the opening and closing of stomata, the pores on a leaf's surface. By encouraging stomata to remain open longer in optimal conditions, the plant can increase its CO₂ uptake for more efficient photosynthesis.

Avoiding the Stress Response: Unlike harsh, dissonant noises or low-frequency, high-amplitude sounds that can mimic threats (e.g., large animals, seismic activity) and trigger a defensive stress response (thigmomorphogenesis), the smooth, ordered sonic texture of a string quartet provides stimulation without alarm. This creates an environment of "eustress"—a beneficial level of stimulation that promotes growth rather than inhibiting it.

Join me as we analyze the specific acoustic properties of this music and connect them directly to the biological processes they influence. We will examine the scientific data and separate rigorous research from horticultural hearsay. This is the real science of sound and botany.

I graduated from Eskişehir Conservatory with a degree in piano. Now, this is my 2nd year in the Bilkent Composition Department. I also work on the university's radio.
