“Produced by DJ Premier.”  From Gang Starr, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Common, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Cee-Lo Green, Mac Miller, Joey Bada$$, Ludacris, The Game & his most recent vehicle; PRhyme; over the course of twenty-five trendsetting years, those four words have become synonymous with the cornerstone of hip-hop’s sound.

However, “Preemo” as he’s affectionately known has always been a conduit for artists of all genres to attach their lyrics to his complex rhythm of the streets--- D’Angelo, Macy Gray, Janet Jackson, Maroon 5, Miguel, Neneh Cherry, Lion Babe, Yuna, Anderson .Paak, & Christina Aguilera (which his work won a Grammy for) to name just a few.  Throughout it all; Grammy’s, Platinum and Gold plaques, undeniable legendary status, Premier has orchestrated a unique sound that remains a hallmark of positive and advanced music.

While Premier has previously collaborated with iconic female artists, in none of the aforementioned examples has the iconic producer/DJ entirely produced one of their projects. With a resume like Premier’s, it takes a lot to get his attention—and perhaps more importantly his respect. 

Enter Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter and musician from Wantagh, New York who traded coasts–bouncing around West Coast cities and enhanced herself artistically; shunning categories, confinement, and convention.  Torii also just happens to be the first female artist to have her entire project (the forthcoming album entitled Flow Riiot) produced by Preemo.  “Torii has such a weird, wicked style,” Premier offers. “It’s just very left field—reminiscent of a Bjork or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer.  But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”

The versatility Premier hints at is evident on Torii Wolf’s first single, the aptly-titled, “1st,” a war-torn and wistful ode to unrequited love and commitment that ultimately leaves more questions than answers, as she ponders “what does it take to keep you from running away.”  Digging into his past catalog, Premier reshuffles the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production from Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” 

Premiered exclusively by Pitchfork, “1st” offers just a glimpse at the musical symmetry and bond Torii developed with Premier creating Flow Riiot and it happened so organically that Torii feels as if something greater was at play, as if the stars aligned to make this musical marriage happen “The great thing about Premier is he’s a tailor and he has this rare and innate ability to cater his sound around who he is working with to accentuate an artist’s strengths; but you can always still tell its Premier.”  

DJ Premier’s excitement is hard to earn and this woman with a massive voice commanded the spotlight. With a Hip-Hop king who has a habit of contributing and producing historic projects behind the boards, Torii Wolf’ debut, Flow Riiot, brings a full clip of moods, range, and vast musical talent. Torii and Premier’s collaborative union bum-rushes the walls of genre, age, and expectations to let the world know there’s a Flow Riiot going on.

The last month has been filled with "1st's" for Torii Wolf; premiering her debut solo track, 1st,” with Pitchfork and the corresponding video with Vevo,  announcing her debut solo album, Flow Riiot, (that just happens to be produced by DJ Premier) and now her “1st” remix featuring Dilated Peoples; which was premiered today by Mass Appeal. 

The original version of “1st” found Premier digging into his past catalog and reshuffling the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production which appeared on Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” With the release of the remix today, “1st” has officially come full circle as Torii and Preemo recruit Evidence and Rakka to officially join them; and with their respective verses and Premier implementing extra punch to the drums and additional piano harmonies—the “1st” (Remix) sounds like an entirely different song.

“I changed the arrangement of Torii's verses and removed the second verse completely” Premier relayed to Mass Appeal.  “I added some extra piano harmonies and it fit on the first attempt. I played all of the sounds; including the piano so there are no samples on the original nor the remix.  Ev and Rakaa sent me 24 bars in total and I split them up into a sixteen and an eight bar set up.   They sounded so good from the original it was a no brainer to get them on the Remix.” 

“When I first laid the song down with Preem we didn't really know where the song would end up" Torii stated.  Preem makes the beat and I express the emotion it evokes inside of me. From there it evolves. Preem is brilliant and he found the perfect line from “Good As Gone” to throw into the mix of the song. I am blown away by what Evidence and Raaka have come up with on this Remix. I love how well they were able to connect with the concept. To feel understood and to hear how other people can unleash a similar emotion (in their own words) and share an understanding of the story is an incredible feeling.” 

Discussing the “1st” (Remix) with Mass Appeal, Ev and Rakaa discuss how Remix discussions began in earnest almost immediately.   “I thought it was dope right off the bat” Evidence shared.  “I kept playing it and really peeped what she was talking about; and felt it even more. Of course I was excited that Preem was cutting our voices up.  I think every rapper secretly wishes that will happen to them.” Rakaa expressed similar sentiments “When I first heard the original, I was kind of shocked because I didn't know we were going to be such an integral part of the song. It's just a line, but Premier put that coal under pressure until it became a diamond. The power and emotion of Tori's voice mixed with a uniquely dope chamber of Boom-Bap created something that is somehow both dark and brilliant--almost haunting. I wanted to be a part of any remix that they were doing immediately, so it was an honor to get the call from my big brother.”
