To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Mark Farina's seminal Mushroom Jazz series, number 7 in my vinylcast series is a throwback to a time when Mushroom Jazz was a cassette series sold in record stores notably Gramaphone Records in Chicago.  I have a small library of Mark's classic cassettes and this is definitely one of my favorites. Spencer Kincy AKA Gemini recorded this mix for Boomtown Records of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada circa 1999(?). Spencer, as a producer and a DJ, had the innate ability to build soundscapes with deep, minimal, soulful tracks and also lay down some super heavy beats with a tribal/tech edge that would blow you away.  His catalogue of productions as well as his DJ sets were full of unexpected and transcendent moments of psychedelia, abstract dissonance, explosive volume, and full on freak outs. He was an enigma as an artist and has become a subject shrouded in mystery as a man. If you listen closely to this mix, I'm sure you can find some real insight into the musical spirit of this very inspirational and influential Chicago underground legend.

O Canada how I love thee let me count the ways! There is a magical cabin in the middle of the woods in deepest Nova Scotia where I have had some nights of revelry and ribaldry with the best crew of people you could ever call friends. This was one of those nights. Mark and I have played together many times over the years but we had never played back to back (if you don't count Red Nail which I don't)until this night and we were lucky enough to get it recorded. The spirits were moving, the vibes were thick and the chemistry was in full effect. We played some new stuff and some classic jams that took me back to Shelter, Red Dog, RedNoFive, Industry, The End, and all the clubs we've partied together over the years. It is not perfect, it is not seamless but it is what happened. This one is for my Classics family. Thanks so much for having us! xoxo

L.A. Loves...Mark Farina was special not only because it was my first event, in partnership with the Music Institute and Seven Leaves, that I've put together in L.A. but also because it gave me a chance to open for one of my main inspirations: Mark Farina. Mark and I go way back and have played together many times over the years. There's something about opening for someone you know so well that gives any DJ an extra incentive to do it right. Opening is so important to creating the proper atmosphere for any event and it is a lost art. "Killing it", "beating it", "murdering it" have become the end all be all of playing music in a club, at a festival, or at an after hours but setting the stage for the next DJ has become a non option. When done well, an opening set opens every possibility to the headlining DJ. They are not constrained or obliged to change the tempo, lower the volume, or change their plan because the opener has completely lost the plot and gone overboard. You have to know how to lead in and that means sometimes doing some homework, finding out what the headliner is all about so that you can create a hunger for that person's music by being informed, subtle and a little humble. I was lucky enough to be an opener in Chicago for many different styles of DJ and often they were artists I'd studied intently. I take pride in being a good opener just as much as I do in headlining. The two roles are equally important in creating a journey for the dancers, the house heads, and DJ's themselves can join together to make that magic only house music can. It's all about connecting from the 1st track to the last. Hope you dig this!

SNEAK'S BIRTHDAY BEATS 50 - Los Angeles - Nov 7 2020

J.Dub is a unique and edgy presence in the Chicago house music pantheon with years of touring and genre smashing production under his belt. He’s toured North America and Europe extensively as a headlining DJ and lead vocalist for Greenskeepers as well as holding multiple residencies at clubs in Chicago, LA, Toronto, and Vancouver.  Material at the legendary Shelter nightclub, regular appearances at Red Dog, Karma, RedNoFive, and notably his Sorted night alongside DJ Heather at the iconic Smart Bar all culminated in his eventual sets at London DJ institutions Ministry of Sound, The End, and Turnmills.  Shows at Toronto’s Industry nightclub propelled him into Canadian house scene leading to tours across the country. His classic mixtapes released by Canadian imprint Blu Funk Recordings solidified his status as an underground house standout and must see live performer.  “Love On The Line”, “Vagabond”, “We Just Won't Stop”, “Through All This Stuff”, “Back and Forth”, “Master of Time”,  “Deepest Trip” and “Too Cool To Dance” are just a few of the buzz worthy vocal projects released by dance/indie labels DFA, Smash Hit, Rockstar, GKM, Farris Wheel, Homecoming and new label home Exploited. During the summer of 2008, J.Dub joined James Curd and L.A. DJ/Musician Chris Holmes in forming electro/rock/rap group Science & Industry.   This multi-talented artist has had past projects remixed by the likes of Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Mark Farina, Stacy Pullen, 1200 Warriors, Chuck Love, JT Donaldson, Members Only, David Duriez and Jason Hodges. Vocal projects on Exploited Recordings with longtime collaborator James Curd opened new doors including extensive radio play in the states especially on L.A.’s globally recognized KCRW. J.Dub recently relocated to the City of Angels and has taken up the mantle of Label Manager for longtime friend and fellow Chicago expatriate Mark Farina’s Great Lakes Audio Recordings imprint.
