The Axis of Exile: Holocaust Tower in the Jüdisches Museum Berlin is a 79 foot tall empty, concrete tower which is neither heated or cooled - it's only light comes from a small slit in the roof. This piece derives some of its sounds from audio and video recordings made there during a visit in fall of 2014. Highly resonant, the space is acoustically animated by a highly creaky door and visitors footsteps. Upon entry most people became silent and left quickly. The Tower conveys the feeling of being trapped. As Elke Heckner wrote in "Whose Trauma Is It? ( in Visualizing the Holocaust ed. by Bathrick, Prager & Richardson, Camden House, 2008)There is a ladder mounted on the wall (but high above human reach) that "...intensifies the spatial iconography of hopelessness." and "...the steep angular height of the space references the otherworldly and the spiritual, but without redemptive implications."
Other source material includes recordings of Tunkwa Lake in British Columbia and various instruments from my studio in Vancouver.
Axis of Exile was created to commemorate the anniversary of the liberation of Aushwitz-Birkenau in 1945.

This is an excerpt from Audio Lodge's 24hr sound installation Time Transposition 1010, which imagines what London, Canada may have sounded like 1000 years ago.  The installation was presented at the University of Western Ontario's University College, a 19th Century neo-Gothic structure as part of the exhibition Mapping Medievalism.  Audio Lodge is a Canadian soundart collective based in London, Ontario.
