Fall 2013 | JRN 450: "Audio Journalism - Radio Reporting and Storytelling" with Steve Drummond, NPR  

This course explores reporting, recording and writing for radio, with a special focus on the use of sound in narrative storytelling. After a brief survey of the technical aspects of audio journalism, students will produce actual journalism for radio: short-form pieces, longer features, profiles, music pieces, criticism, interviews and live broadcasting. Joining the discussions will be veteran radio journalists from NPR.

HOST: From Princeton Public Radio, this is All Things Considered. In the new rom-com Enough Said, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini play Eva and Albert. It's a love story. But the boy and the girl are nearly 50, and divorced, and with daughters on the way to college. Here's Jeanette Beebe with a review.

JEANETTE BEEBE: Okay. If you're under 25, you're going to have to get over the sex part. Eva and Albert are definitely middle aged -- with ear hair, missing teeth, and a few wrinkles. They don't hide anything.

Film Review - "Enough Said" | November 2013

HOST: Princeton's Garden Theatre premiered two new films this week. One is 12 Years a Slave, an adaptation of the memoir by Salomon Northrup. Northrup is played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. It's directed by Steve McQueen. Jeanette Beebe has this review.

JEANETTE BEEBE: 12 Years a Slave is a portrait of the Antebellum South from a unique perspective: a formerly free black man. Salomon, a professional violinist, is tricked and kidnapped in Washington, D.C.. He wakes up as a slave in New Orleans.

Film Review - "12 Years a Slave" | November 2013

HOST: It's that time of year again — crunching leaves, hissing espresso, crisp textbooks, brisk air. In college towns around the country, the new school year in beginning. Princeton, New Jersey celebrates its own way — there's a freshman parade, social club sign ups, arts auditions, new course schedules. Students return to fanfare and, eventually, to routine. But some students don't take the typical path to graduation. Princeton Public Radio's Jeanette Beebe reports.  

JEANETTE BEEBE: 12%. That's how many students graduate Princeton in five years, instead of four. 4%. That's how many graduate in six years. For many, Princeton is a place to go, and leave, and come back.

"At Princeton, Students Take Time Off and Mind the Gap Years" | October 2013

HOST: At one o'clock this morning, the University of Colorado at Boulder closed its campus in response to the city's flash flood warning. At least 400 to 500 graduate students and 13 undergraduates have been evacuated thus far. Princeton Public Radio's Jeanette Beebe reports.

JEANETTE BEEBE: At a town press conference, Bronson Hillard, spokesman for the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Ryan Duff of the City of Boulder's Police Department reported on the flooding from Boulder Creek. Duff says the worst may be still to come.

"Flash Floods Engulf Boulder, Colorado; Residents Urged to Stay Indoors" | September 2013

HOST: In October, New Jersey became the 14th state to legalize same-sex marriage. After Republican Governor Chris Christie announced he would drop his appeal against the New Jersey Supreme Court, the LGBT community celebrated the day as a victory. It's been two months, and some couples are still waiting to say "I Do." Princeton Public Radio's Jeanette Beebe has this report.

JEANETTE BEEBE: Not all gay marriages are created equal. At least that's what the story seems to be for couples who were married in another state before they came to New Jersey.
