Flying the flag for ‘quality independent electronic music’, born and bred on a national and global scale in their homebase of Australia and beyond, Balance Music have been at the very forefront of underground house music since its inception, expertly guided by experienced director Tom Pandzic. Their revered Balance Mix Series (Established in 2000) has seen the likes of Max Cooper, James Zabiela, Kolsch, Hernan Cattaneo, Henry Saiz, Danny Tenaglia, Deetron, Joris Voorn, Patrice Baumel, James Holden, Agoria, Phil K (R.I.P.), and more step up to the plate for one of the most essential collections across the entirety of the electronica spectrum, whilst Balance Series, their showcase for expressive tech, progressive and wider variations of house music, is a focal point of the sound. The latter has nurtured top-drawer releases from quality artists encompassing a plethora of upcoming and established acts. For an artist, the hardest skill to master is the ability to transcend, be it the era that created them, the work that defined them, or even the fame that elevated them, but those who are successful are rewarded with a title that can only be earned: legend. Derrick “D-Nice” Jones, with a multi-decade music career that has taken him from the Apollo to the Singapore, and seemingly everywhere in- between, can proudly say he’s earned it.

To understand why D-Nice can be spotted spinning all over the globe you need to know where he began—the Bronx. At just 16 years old, D-Nice was a founding member of the iconic ‘80s rap group Boogie Down Productions. By 1990, he had a Billboard number one single off his self-produced debut album, “Call Me D-Nice.” But as the landscape of hip-hop and New York itself began to shift, D-Nice recognized the need to transcend.

A proven talent behind the turntables, D-Nice sought a creative outlet in famed downtown clubs such as Selena and Table 50. The venues where pioneering DJs, like Mark Ronson and Q-Tip, were blending old school tracks and dance classics with the latest rock soon became his home away from home, and it wasn’t long before he had his own night. Suddenly, the MC from uptown was the hottest DJ downtown—and around the world. At events from Oscar night galas to parties thrown by Diddy, D-Nice could now be heard in Paris, Singapore, South Africa, Miami...

It was also around this time that D-Nice discovered he not only possessed an ear for a mix, but an eye for capturing images as well. Strapped with a Leica camera from his expanding collection, he began documenting his life. A visit to D-Nice.com can yield a portrait of Halle Berry or Kid Rock as easily as an artful street scene of Brooklyn. Music and photography became two expressions of the ever-expanding BrandNice.

D-Nice moves seamlessly between gigs, whether he’s rocking the Apollo Theater’s Spring Gala with Stevie Wonder or appearing as a featured photographer on Tyra Bank’s “America’s Next Top Model.” Currently a brand DJ for Hennessy, he also holds a DJ residency at Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino and had the distinct honor of playing President Barack Obama’s 2012 Inaugural Ball.

Positive and always creative, the father of two continues to evolve BrandNice into new territory. He looks forward to his upcoming solo photography exhibit and an international DJ tour. “I love music festivals. It amazes me that people will come watch a DJ explore with music. They show up for me to take them on a musical journey and it’s something I will never take for granted.”

In other words, they look to D-Nice for something transcendent.

Berlin-based duo Booka Shade, aka Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, have carved out a reputation as one of the most celebrated electronic acts to come out of Europe over the past two decades. 

With their beginnings in Frankfurt and their sights originally on synth-pop, the duo Booka Shade quickly gained a strong following within electronic music, and in 2002 the pairing formed the now legendary dance label Get Physical Music (together with M.A.N.D.Y., Thomas ‘DJ T.’ Koch and Peter Hayo), where they would have a platform for their own music. 

Three years later, in 2005, their EP’s ‘Mandarine EP’ and ‘Body Language’ - the latter co-produced with M.A.N.D.Y. - launched Booka Shade into the stratosphere with both EPs becoming international successes, whilst the following years soon welcomed an extensive body of work featuring a combination of stand out albums and singles that quickly achieved further global success.

Since their break-through performance at Sónar in 2005, Booka Shade have earned huge recognition with their innovative live shows, even being named one of Resident Advisor's Top 5 live acts in the world in 2010. They have opened for legendary acts such as Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, whilst headlining stages at the likes of Coachella, Glastonbury, Rock Werchter, and Red Rocks just to name a few. In recent years, the band has appeared amongst the likes of DJ Mag’s ‘Alternative Top 100 DJ List’ (2018), whilst their notable live sets have led to key mentions amongst a host of distinguished festival reviews and round-ups, including placement within DJ Mag’s ’10 Unforgettable Sets From The History Of Exit Festival’.

Booka Shade were also inducted into Pete Tong's BBC Radio 1 Hall of Fame, having received strong support from the station throughout their careers, playing at both the ‘40 Years of Radio 1’ celebration with Annie Nightingale and the ‘20 Years of Essential Mix’ party, whilst also mixing Pete Tong’s ‘All Gone Ibiza’ compilation album. 

The duo’s fan base is in no way restricted to electronic music enthusiasts, with great success playing slots at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Lollapalooza, and more by utilising their massive crossover potential, which is as evident in their billings as it is in their remix credits, including acts like Depeche Mode, Moby, Hot Chip, Kings of Leon, Woodkid, The Knife and many more.

Add to the mix their Blaufield Music imprint, founded in 2013, and it’s clear and easy to see the pairing's musical knowledge not only as producers but also adept A&R’s, with releases to date on the imprint from both emerging and established talent alongside their own productions resulting in a string of releases and collaborations that can be regularly found amongst the upper end of Beatport’s Top 100 charts and championed by many of the industry’s biggest names.

Twenty years, dozens of EP’s and six albums later, Booka Shade have become more than a household name, they have become synonymous with the spirit which drives electronic music and have set a precedent to which electronic music is still held to today.

Circles Around The Sun’s fourth studio album traverses towards galaxies unknown – Language is the sound of a rock band rebounding from unthinkable adversity, moving as one to confidently author their next chapter. Synth-drenched excursions into outer-spatial sound design, the six-song release welcomes guitarist John Lee Shannon to the fold, a longtime peer and tourmate who joins bassist Dan Horne, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, and drummer Mark Levy. 

The forthcoming release builds on the cosmic-disco vibe of 2020’s eponymous LP. The Floydian tongues on Language represent a new dawn, as evidenced by an ethereal title-track featuring harpist Mikaela Davis. The new material finds them oscillating through hybrid strains of disco-funk, soul jazz, and psychedelic rock, harnessing their stylistic lanes into a singular, intoxicating brew.

“We had been partying on other planets for a while when we found our new guy John Lee Shannon. We all got in the studio and played disco ball dodgeball for a while and this is what we came up with. There's a bit of a different arc to Language. The first couple songs are gonna put you in a certain headspace, and then the party happens later on,” notes bassist Dan Horne on the creation of the new record.

The band immersed themselves in sound design research at Horne’s Echo Park studio, Liberty Hair Farm. Longtime creative partners dove into exploration mode, probing the limitless potential of an arsenal of synthesizers, sequencers, and other vintage electronic instrumentation. 

Soon the seeds were sown for Circles Around The Sun’s fourth full-length album Language which is out now.

DJ Statik aka Mr. Sonny James is well versed in music and hip hop culture as a writer, DJ, producer, videographer, and actor. Most known for his role as co-founder of Philadelphia’s most prolific and well-respected DJ/Production crew, Illvibe Collective he has maintained a solid following in the Philadelphia, Tri State Area.  He is the official tour DJ for legendary MC Bahamadia and other international hip-hop artists, including Hezekiah, Shape of Broad Minds, and Mr. Lif.  Famously noted as “your DJ’s favorite DJ,” Statik’s sets have regularly hit popular New York venues such as Santos Party House, Sutra, SOBs and APT.  He is an annual staple at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX and at Miami’s Winter Music Conference on South Beach. Additionally, Statik’s full and diverse roster currently includes a DJ residency for Heineken Green Room events with two.one.five magazine; various events around the world for the infamous Scratch DJ Academy, co-founded by the late DJ Jam Master Jay, and a residency with the legendary Beat Society producer showcase. Sonny James’ musicality as a producer can be heard on various remixes as well as on the Illvibe Collective debut album released on SoulSpazm/Fat Beats in 2011. With a wide mixtape catalogue, a growing reputation in the international club scene, and a diverse spectrum of musical genres, Mr. Sonny James is regarded  as a true taste maker on his way to legendary status.
