Jump the lights is a very British single, and echoes the tales told by Difford and Tilbrook’s Squeeze. It tells the story a couple living through the broke but fun early years of their relationship, “these memories I need to boast living in a one room bedsit living on tea and toast” and their adventures on holiday in a caravan on the Isle of Man. Random proposals of marriage made on a ferry and on a ghost train at a fairground are met with rebuffs from the girl saying “don’t try to change me…don’t jump the lights”.  Eventually the girl accepts his proposal but only on certain conditions….

This is a modern Fairy Tale about a guy whose wife has left him. Missing her badly he goes in search of her only to discover, from the local vicar, that she now calls herself Goldilocks and the way she gets a living is not entirely clear. The vicar describes her as an "alchemist, she'll melt you down.....she'd quit the job only if she could, she says she feels a little like little red riding hood, she know the score, it keeps the wolf from the door". How does she keep the wolf from the door? That's the question.

This is a story about a certain person I once knew. It has been fictionalised to a large extent, but the vibe of the character has been captured.

Screaming out for Love

This is a track from the Snowed Under Bowled Over album which didn't get promoted due to the Coronavirus lock down. It is a ballad. The chorus of the song was written in 1989 in  Poland when the Berlin Wall came down. I was recording (Making a much earlier Album with Jude Roea and Nick Paige called Mystic in the Making) in a TV studio in Szczecin, just over the border to Berlin, when I wrote the chorus to this song. It stayed with me all this time, so I was glad to finish it and write the verses and middle section in 2018.

Zebras

This is another track from the "Snowed Under Bowled Over" album. I wrote the song in Harberton in Devon, it came in a rush. I quickly recorded the melody on my phone. I used some words from an old poem I'd written about thirty years ago. It worked well. I'm really pleased with the out come. The track, as always, on this album and previous recordings, features the fantastic backing vocals of Claire Hoinville.

One Story Line

This track "Uniform Exchange" is a celebration of diversity. It is a pop/rock/rap track with Ukulele, electric guitars and Groove. 
The Beatles, arguably the most successful band ever, were so diverse in their production and writing with three different singers and writers in the band. So few bands have learnt from their example; it's what made them so durable.

Train to Bantham is a song dedicated to all those people out there who feel they need a break. Not necessarily a break from just their work but from the constant deluge of technological gadgets that has taken over our lives; laptops, mobile phones and all the Apps and stuff that goes with them. Bantham is a beautiful part of the coast in south Devon. It is a sanctuary a completely undisturbed conservation area that has stayed the same for centuries. The song advocates that, just for one day, we exchange our mobile phones for a sea shell and listen to the  sea instead of..........

This is an excellent version of an old song of mine (Jeff Lowe) sung by my niece Holly Jazz Kotze. This was produced by Dave Lowe and Jeff Lowe and Holly Jazz Kotze (was Lowe) Great Bass playing by Dave Lowe. Main riff guitar is played by me (Jeff Lowe) on a Telecaster that belonged to Dave Greaves. I wanted to buy that guitar but he wouldn't sell it.  Great Sound!!

HIppos is a song of mine (Jeff Lowe) that was originally recorded by Jude Roea. (On the album: Mystic in the Making) Jude does a great version but I wanted to finally get round to singing the track myself as it has always been one of my favourites. The song is about 28 years old. It was originally written about the all too human reluctance to change. We all sometimes lack the energy or ability to jump out of the water of a murky situation. It's much better to change life, to take a more positive approach rather than lurking and sulking around in the past. Amen.

This is the second play of the album from James at BBC introducing. He has a pop at the fade end which apparently is one of his pet hates, In my defense the album version doesn't fade, but I had to cut the full version down for the single. Anyway big thanks for James for supporting and playing G.E.M.

The inspiration for this song was taken from a New Age/self improvement book. The book in question,
in supposedly giving advice on how to have a successful relationship, failed to observe that love is a
spontaneous living unpredictable indefinable thing. Human beings are very complicated and while
advice about how to handle certain situations and people may be valid, the message of ‘Do You
Know?’ is don't destroy your relationship by putting it in a category, by trying to squeeze it into a box.
The irony of the chorus lyrics will be for some, very obvious:

give do you know how to live do you know when there's nothing there. Can you voice your opinions

Jenga is a beautifully produced musical protest against the seemingly lethargic efforts of governments to address the ecological problems facing planet earth.  Players of the game Jenga take turns removing one block at a time from a tower constructed of 54 blocks. Each block removed is then placed on top of the tower, creating a progressively taller and more unstable structure. With the very notion of fracking and the disgusting levels of pollution from plastic and fossil fuels threatening to destabilise the very fine ecological balance of our planet, GEM saw Jenga as the perfect metaphor to describe the alarming global picture.  
"Who will take responsibility for the things that matter most, is the planet just a slave to the will of a ministry of ghosts, our future's in the balance we're living in the past, we're slow to hear the message the climate's changing fast

This track is called "Streams of Love" which is taken from the Album "Songs for Hestia". It was a kind of interim album that I managed to make while we were in the middle of moving. "Streams of Love" is about an awakening, about staring the fear of being hurt in the face and taking a gamble to love someone and put your heart on the line.

Kaleidoscope is the second single to be released from G.E.M.s new 1919 Album: Snowed Under Bowled Over.  One reviewer commented "This has one hell of a catchy chorus, without being the kind of earworm that eats away at your brain....lyrically well it’s a l kind of Wolf in beautifully produced groovy non-sheep’s clothing".
