Peter-Anthony Togni’s “Lamentatio Jeremiah Prophetae” is a contemporary concerto for bass clarinet and choir. Written in 5 movements for virtuoso soloist Jeff Reilly and the Elmer Iseler Singers conducted by Lydia Adams, it is an innovative and multi-faceted work; melodic, exploratory, passionate, and soulful.

“Lamentations” is the most ambitious and extensive collaboration to date of more than a decade of musical partnership between composer Peter-Anthony Togni and bass clarinetist Jeff Reilly. Peter and Jeff have worked together since 1998 in the trio Sanctuary, which has performed hundreds of concerts in Canada, the USA, Europe and Asia. Over these years Peter and Jeff have discovered a musical empathy between them that is rich, intense and lyrical.

Premiered in 2007, Lamentations was released internationally on ECM records in March of 2010.

Lamentations is a piece based on ancient texts, but it resonates deeply with our own time. The work is based on the sayings of the biblical prophet Jeremiah, whose heart-rending life and true prophesies of dire warning went largely unheeded by those he sought to warn.
It is an exploration of grief, atonement, despair and finally, hope.

The second piece in a new series of soundscapes that I am creating on the theme of re-occurring dreams. This one reflects a dark but very large basement full of machines. There is much work going on but the atmosphere is intense, thick and powerful. It is an intense, slow build to a roaring climax.

The entire suite will be for solo bass clarinet, strings and percussion. It will be created in a 4 phase process - first by recording raw material, then editing that material and creating a digital composition, the third stage will be creating a written score based on the digital material, and the final stage will be a performance (and hopefully a recording ) of the completed composition.

This is a story of a God, an omnipotent, but deeply flawed deity born within the structures and restrictions of Universal Royalty and power. His basket, gifted to him by his Mother Phoebe, harbored a dust that if sprinkled could create or destroy anything he could think of. But Europa, his moon partner tried to warn him: playing with life in this way could lead to miscalculation…..
 
Featuring a diverse collection of Halifax’s most accomplished musicians, the five songs that tell this story are interspersed with intense and dramatic orchestral interludes.

Extreme Unction is the name given to the last rite of the Catholic Church reserved for people who are on the threshold of passing from the material consciousness and state of being to a different one. As the title implies, Extreme Unction is a dark piece about dying and the difficult but inevitable transformation from a physical consciousness, to a higher one. It depicts the quiet opening of the floodgates of the Spirit, as our connection to the material world weakens and eventually ceases altogether. This process is often not a willing surrender. It alternates between our sense of an approaching light and the peace and joy that accompany it and the often violent efforts of our physical body to cling to that which we already know and hold dear.

Half notated, half improvised, Extreme Unction is a composition that allows for an imaginary glimpse of our afterlife and of our instinctive struggle to cling on to the things we know. It is a meditation on dying and on what may lie beyond, as well as a (hopefully) early attempt to come to terms with this important and inevitable milestone in my own life.

and it is perfectly fine
to say your own eyes are pretty

it is wonderful to love your waist
and your legs
regardless of their size
and you are not conceited
if you use your fingers to list
everything you’re good at
rather than point at all your own flaws

you can acknowledge you’re smart
and that you will go places
and you will be someone
greater than your mistakes
