Composer Beth Anderson writes. “In 1997 Keith Borden, a singer and administrator at Greenwich House Music School, asked me to write a set of songs using Harlem Renaissance poets set for piano, string bass, and voice.  It took several years to accomplish because acquiring the rights to each poem was not straight forward. "

"Tableau by poet Countee Cullen deals with the friendship between black and white friends and the displeasure it causes in both their communities."

Harlem Songs was recorded by baritone Keith Borden, pianist Johannes Wallmann and bassist Darren Campbell for the Albany Records release Beth Anderson Quilt Music (Troy 709).  

Beth Anderson’s music has been described as having “a refreshing simplicity without naiveté” and as “deeply felt, direct, and yes, beautiful” and “charming and deeply felt to the point of romanticism.” MSR Classics has issued The Praying Mantis and the Bluebird – Flute Music of Beth Anderson (MS1434) - World Premiere recordings of 11 works and New World Records released Swales and Angels - World Premiere recordings of 7 works.
