2021 Marching Band Shows

Per Aspera Ad Astra was commissioned by the 2020-2021 Kamiakin High School Instrumental Musical program during the Covid-19 pandemic when all classes were virtual. The Italian translation of the title is, "through hardships to the stars". Students brainstormed ideas with me over zoom and the piece was composed so that it could be recorded and performed virtually. Fortunately, virtual learning came to an end and the piece was able to be performed live! 

The piece has a lot of cinematic influences and is orchestrated for flex band/orchestra meaning that it can work for a full orchestra or just a concert band. The piece also uses a backing track that can be played through any speaker system or programmed to a MainStage setup. "Amelia Earhart" Original Marching Band Show

Throughout history there have been cycles of Peace, Conflict, and Healing. One of these cycles we are looking at in our show is a snapshot of the 1960’s-1970’s. We start with an image of prosperity, in our cookie cutter white picket fence neighborhood, and are interrupted by the 1969 Draft Lottery, with homes being torn apart, and two distinct sides being drawn up- Pro-war and Anti-war. This is shown with our militaristic block marching on our hippie protest, with a huge clash when the two sides meet. After these events take place, we are left with broken homes and families on both sides. Fire and Rain, the classic James Taylor song, starts to help us find healing with love, even though we have differences. Having found common ground, we celebrate with a rendition of The Fifth Dimension’s Aquarius (Let The Sunshine In)! This is the 2016 production from the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps from Pasco Washington.

We had just been launched into WWII courtesy of the attacks on Pearl Harbor and our country saw things such as sending good men off to war, death, a revitalized economy, USO shows and more. What was America's perspective on all of this? That's what this show is all about. This is the 2015 production from the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps from Pasco Washington.

Beyond attempting to replicate Holkenborg's orchestration, I wanted a look under the hood at how a major film composer completes the atmosphere of a film using music and sound design. While my recreation features a few creative liberties, capturing the adrenaline and thrill of the film, through Holkenborg's interpretation, was the main goal.

Mad Max: Fury Road - "Brothers In Arms" Soundtrack Remake

Coldplay's first major single turned 20 this month! I was working on an arrangement of this song, for a scholastic group, that unfortunately got delayed due to COVID-19. So I took the opportunity to reimagine the song through some alt-indie influences like Bon Iver, S. Carey, and Sufjan Stevens.

This is my first full project in Logic Pro X! I've been working in Adobe Audition the past five years and am excited to branch out into a more robust production software.
