Soundscapes for the Emotional-Type Listener

Kali Malone’s “Organ Dirges 2016 - 2017" is a collection of isorhythmic canons following the tradition of pipe organ requiems found in early modern music. Malone’s purified organ dirges echo embodied recollections of the piercing numbness of those battled encounters when the armours were stripped down, left with nothing other than will power, yet still standing upright as the columns of Sounion. The soothing and perceptive harmonies resonate to a presence that leans elegantly towards a courageous aftermath and a gleaming salutation. While the dirges themselves have minimal melodic and rhythmic variation, they appear in constant cyclical motion, revealing their refracted selves in a coherent yet unpredictable manner; like a rotating wheel where all spokes are perceptible but at any given moment in a different place.

Kali Malone (b. 1994, Colorado) is an American artist living and working in Stockholm, Sweden since 2012. Her solo works implement unique tuning systems in minimalist form for analog and digital synthesis often combined with acoustic instrumentation - such as pipe organ, string and wind instruments, lute and gong. Malone’s 2017 debut LP “Velocity of Sleep” was released on her own label XKatedral following tape releases put out by Ascetic House, Bleak Environment and Total Black. She is active in the groups Sorrowing Christ, Swap Babies, Upper Glossa with Caterina Barbieri. Her sophomore LP “Cast of Mind” is due spring 2018.

Forty years since its creation, Jon Hassell's Fourth World aesthetic remains a powerful influence on modern electronic music. Continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of recombination and musical gene-splicing, fragments of performance are sampled, looped, overdubbed and re-arranged into beguiling unexpected shapes. Hassell applies the painterly technique of ‘pentimento’ to the arrangements, teasing out texture by the overlaying of sound upon sound, or a carefully timed reveal of the delicate bones pinning the frame of a track together.

The release of this new album also sees the launch of Jon’s own label, Ndeya (pronounced “in-day-ya”), which will be a home for new work as well as well as selected archival releases, including re-presses of classic sides and some astonishing unreleased music.

With Immortal Word, Baltimore percussive extraordinaire David Jacober returns to gleefully eerie apparitional atmospheres first excised on The Gray Man in 2015 . On this tenth installment of Geographic North's Sketch for Winter series - highlighting compositions intentionally crafted for the colder season - Jacober beachcombed his way through frigid fog and frosted flotsam that washed ashore to cull 6 new songs of hypnotized hauntology and curiously climatic chorales with his trusty marimba mallets in tow.

Immortal Word opens with “Four Horsemen”, rippling across an incoming tide of bubbling, frothing percussion and mirthful melody. “Toast” breaks through the misting, overcast skies with a pulsing, sifting rhythm and wide-eyed optimism. The album’s namesake, “Immortal Word” turns that positivity inward, exploring a pile of tuneful textures and playful phrases.

On the B-side, “Flashbacking” wafts through a vacated, shadow-lined boardwalk in a euphoric daze of unhurried movement. The cold gust that is “Witching Hours” reels itself upward in a reversed rain of dripping tones. Closer “Universal Sign” makes calm space to host a sort of moonlit seance, decked in a wistful cloud of peripheral synesthesia.
