DJ Promo started around 1992 as a DJ. Back then he played at smaller gabber parties and because he didn't have a permanent place, he also organized his own hardcore parties. At those parties, which took place in community centers and sports halls, the then more famous DJs from the genre also came. When he also started producing around 1995, he became more noticeable to the public. His first hit dates back to the gabber era: his gabber version of Don't Speak by No Doubt became a success.

When the movement disappeared at the end of the nineties due to overkill and commercial parodies of gabber music, Promo continued to produce. This resulted in the 'Promo File' series, which he first released under the ID&T label. The 'Promo Files' were at the root of a change in the sound of hardcore music. Characteristic was the slower tempo but kicks that were harder. In 2000 he started his own label, The Third Movement, together with colleague X-ess.

In 2003 Promo got the chance to show his modern hardcore at Q-dance's hardstyle party "Qlimax". However, a few days before the party, Promo decided not to play after Q-dance only gave him 30 minutes and also asked if he didn't want to play hard. The following year, Promo was asked to shut down Sensation Black.

In 2004 X-ess and Catscan left, giving DJ Promo complete freedom. He came up with his alias Rude Awakening (industrial, experimental hardcore/techno/electro) and he set up a booking agency, where almost all major hardcore artists are affiliated. He also brought a number of sub-labels where he gave fellow artists (Tommy Pulse and Lady Dana) the opportunity to release their music.
