This is my version of Billy Curries's solo featured in 'On Broadway' from the 'Living Ornaments '79' album by Gary Numan.
This version tries to emulate the original production mixed by Tim Summerhayes from the free single/1980 EP not the newer mix from the LO79 CD also mixed by TS, but not as good in my opinion.
I used a GMedia Oddity VST for the solo, Pro53 for the Voxhumana Polymoogs, Yamaha CP-30, and the Yamaha SW1000 for the bass guitar part.
The CR78 pattern was created from various 'one-shot' samples.

I recently had the pleasure of mixing/mastering the really cool "don camillo chors" directed by Matthias Seitz :)

It is a German chorus-ensemble from Munich, a city incidentally known for some of Europe's best open-air rock-concerts, which have won several awards for their performances and music (One of them being the "Leopold", which is a German award that goes to music-recordings aimed at kids)

I am really pleased with how this work turned out and very thankful to Melanie Kude for allowing me to share an amazing song with you :)

The song "The Marsh Marigold's Song" is an a cappella performance, with about 35 voices, that belongs to a concert called "Kasimirs Abenteuer" (Kasimir's Adventure), which is a concert mixed with theater and story-telling for kids and families (I saw a video of one of the performances and the kids were totally in love with it :) . It is about a lava-stone that gets hurled out of a volcano and goes on a magical adventure through a world of funny and strange creatures and flowers :) )

Now, I love 'church-choirs' and choirs in general. I once made a ~30 minute long gothic church-choir song (A very atmospheric, but also very esoteric, piece. Somewhat dark and medieval. A kind of a praise to Jeanne d'Arc actually), which I am still very proud of. But other than that it is unfortunately not a genre I have dealt much in, so this was a really wonderful opportunity and experience I just had to dive into, body and soul :)

The song here was recorded LIVE in a single take, through a dominant-array miking setup and some close-mics for the different tonal-sections and one for the lead-vocal.
So I had a series of dry-recorded tracks to work with, which is superb, since that gave me full freedom to color the tracks and tone as I wanted :)

Despite this song belonging to a concert being intended for kids and families, I opted for a more 'adult' theme, or slight sense of separation-drama perhaps, in the sound.
So I placed the main-body of the choir as a sort of wall between you (The listener) and the lead-vocal.

The purpose is to create a sense of distance to the lead-vocal. A sense of it being somebody or something slightly out of reach (Perhaps a lover or a desire you have)

My inspiration for that actually comes from how traditional Swedish Saint Lucia church-concerts have often been held (At least those I have seen), where they often have the choral lead vocal standing in the upper-back rows of the choir (To get more of the room's reverberation to color the voice)

That 'trick' works amazingly well, to emphasize the lead without the main-choir drowning it out, since the choral lead is 'just' sounds and not words (Well, usually anyway. When they ARE words they are usually very protracted, so still 'reverb-friendly') :)
So I can not say that that constellation is some ingenious idea of my own, haha :)
