I love love! It’s so powerful and beautiful to me. I want it, I crave it, I admire it, and yet... I haven't found it myself. Summer is always an especially strange time for me and love. I’m always way more in my feels. Tumultuous experiences that leave me feeling sad, lost, and longing so deeply for something that remains out of reach.

Mostly a mix of drum & bass, ambient and breaks, it was made during profound feelings of sadness and longing. It takes you through beautiful highs…. those euphoric feelings you get with love. But it also takes you through a disorienting and broken place where you are so lost and lonely.

I hope by listening to this mix, one can experience the sweeping span of emotions I did while making it. I just really like using my emotions to guide my mixing.

This week we warmly welcome Soft Break to the series. The Rotterdam-based artist is a DJ, multidisciplinary designer and one of the founders of AMPFEMININE, a DJ collective based in Rotterdam aiming to add a variety of colour behind the decks and adding feminine energy that is missing in the power dynamics that are currently in place. She is also one of the latest graduates from the No Shade DJ Mentoring Program 2020 in Berlin. Her eclectic, high-energy sets reflect her early encounters with her city's jungle, dubstep and grime scene. She moves through gentle vocals, techno, footwork, hip hop and sub destroying bass. Lock in for a take-no-prisoners hour of club-driven rhythmic bangers.

Few DJs around dig for such a broad range of music as St. Jakob and even fewer are capable of making the music shine as bright as he does. And literally no one else dresses more chic for it.

Jakob grew up with piles of tapes, CDs and vinyl records with music from around the world his father had accumulated. That obviously made an impact and turned Jakob into an ardent digger as well. He has dipped his fingers in many virtual and physical crates and catalogues over the years, which resulted in a considerable collection of all kinds of stuff – be it ambient classics and novelties, acid and techno jams old and new, pumping house, gentle disco…The list could go on and as it suggests, Jakob likes to be thorough and research the history as much as the present, while traveling around the world with his ears.

After coming on board of the once prolific XYZ collective, Jakob became an essential member. With his taste and sensibilities he largely contributed to the collective’s label inventory and brought to the world several of XYZ records.

His on-and-off studio work remains to be defined. There are only some bits he has released here and there, but those who witnessed few of his live performances were bathed in his warm, mostly downtempo and ambient compositions, with a warm feel and a pinch of salt.

The "Essence mix series" showcases creators of Electronic music who are exploring the boundaries of breaks & bass music.

For the first edition, we proudly present the newest addition to the SLET roster: Surrealich, a creature formed by sonic matter, able to shape-shift itself into many facets of contemporary electronic music. A colourful mixture of moods, yet eclectic and heavy hitting beats are what this being will indulge the listener into; bringing out energies unknown to themselves.

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.
