Moab, Utah, a little town in the southeast corner of the state, isn't the likeliest of places for a burgeoning LGBTQ pride movement. But the Moab Pride Festival, established in 2011, calls itself "...the nation's second largest small town Pride Festival." In these places, where everyone knows everyone, it can be hard to stand up for something you believe in -- something that makes you different -- but maybe it's exactly these hometowns that have the best shot at pioneering a community-driven atmosphere of tolerance and understanding. This was a featured piece on Public Radio Exchange. It aired on PRX Remix, NPR-affiliates KUOW and WAMC and community stations KBCS and KZMU.

When you think about the Arctic what do you see? Maybe vast landscapes of ice, tall snowcapped coastal peaks, polar bears and seals, explorers trekking ever onwards towards the pole? There's another arctic that is not immediately visible though, hidden below the surface of the ocean. And down in the deep there is water that could have a big impact on the frozen world above. Mother nature has some amazing sounds but unfortunately, Homo sapiens tend to forget these sounds are for free as they walk around with ear buds listening to musical crap....

Sounds fill our world. From the slightest rustling of leaves to the dramatic power of a thunderstorm, the sounds produced on planet earth—both biological and non-biological in origin—combine to form vast tapestries called soundscapes. These soundscapes are ever-changing compositions: the songs of the earth.

In this audio piece, we explore one broad component of the soundscape: geophony. The term geophony encompasses all of the wild, non-biological sound sources on earth. Roaring avalanches and crashing ocean waves. Trickling streams and whistling wind. The deafening blasts of volcanic eruptions. The low, almost inaudible rumbling of glaciers.

Geophony was the first sound on earth, and it provides the framework within which all other sound arises.

A few minutes of my nature field recordings. Other than long cross-fades and overlaps, these tracks are unprocessed. Belize, Bali, and Washington State are among the places depicted.

Despite what images these sounds may bring to mind, no animals were harmed in the making of this recording. The camel may sound annoyed (or worse), but in reality, he appeared completely unimpressed by everything around him.  (Apparently, he always sounds like this, if his owner scratches his belly a certain way).
