Update 3/20/2015 - Used new sample library for woodwinds.

Leave it to Link to disrupt their business with his pot smashing. I went with an instrumentation fit for chamber music, as this track takes place only indoors. The original version is extremely soft, and for people in a hurry, they might miss the nice melodic resolution in the second half. I took it another step further and added another section based on an inversion of the main piece. It took me some effort to get the harmony unique enough because it was sounding too much like "Kids Run Around the City Corner" from Final Fantasy VI, which as one of my favorite tracks in my favorite video game soundtrack, is permanently burned in my head. Anyway, I still need to work on balancing the instruments as they sound too blurred together no matter how I adjust them.

Update 3/20/15 - Re EQ'ed, adjusted some of the piano tempo

After going through numerous tracks with more lighthearted tone and different genres, I was finally excited to return to a more traditional classical intense piece. Usually my version is slower, but in this instance I really ramped up the speed. After the first four dungeons, I treated the fifth as the start of a darker second act of the game. The theme is no longer a variation of the Caves melody.

In this dungeon, Link is under the sinister gaze of the skeleton warrior. You have to be on your toes for most of the first half because he could show up in any screen. However, by the end you realize that the warrior is actually afraid of you. You are the one actually chasing him down, and reclaiming the treasure. Whereas the first half of my arrangement is a faithful recreation of the original theme, the second half represents the raw emotion Link (hopefully) and the enemies display: dread, fear, determination, resignation. The rhythm is broken up, and the dungeon progression transitions from a chase to a slaughter.

Update 3/20/15 - Re EQ'ed

I must admit when I decided on which combination of instruments to use for each siren instrument, I did not consider how they would sound together when played together, so arranging this track was as much a discovery for me as you listening to it.

The Game Boy hardware only allows 4 audio tracks to be played simultaneously, so in the final playing of the instruments, you may not hear all of the instruments represented, and some only show up briefly within the song. However, you can go to the wind fish egg at any point in the game and play the ballad using just the instruments you acquired up to that point. This allowed me to get a reference for how each instrument was used. For fun, I panned the instruments exactly like it appears in the circle around Link. Each instrument performance remains for the most part unaltered from the original, except for the cello. The original game has the cello and conch horn playing the melody in unison, so I separated them and gave the cello harmony and counter-melody to play instead. I also decided to add the ocarina into the mix even though you don't hear it in the game, because it would be weird seeing Link in that pose with no sound, as if he's lip-syncing!

Here is another Zelda Wii U track that I composed, it has been a while since I have uploaded a fan made Zelda Wii U track, so I thought I should create some more. I made this track to fit a horseback battle, fast paced and heavy. I can imagine there will be a few battles whilst exploring the land of Hyrule on the Wii U game!

I've done the dungeon theme already in Link's Awakening, so for this one, I had think really hard hard to differentiate my second attempt. I decided to make it sound the least Zelda-like as possible. When I think of my time playing the original Zelda, the dungeons were definitely the most difficult. The droning background arpeggios really added to the tension I would feel, and the repetitive tiled screens really gave me claustrophobia.

To contrast the energetic and hopeful tone of the overworld theme. I went for doom and gloom in the dungeons. The dungeons that lay host to the most dangerous ancient beasts must have given Link second thoughts. There was a reason why Zelda chose to hide the Triforce pieces in these ruins filled with long forgotten lore. Every enemy in every screen call out for Link's death, as he does not belong there.

I spent the majority of my efforts on an original tune that would slowly build up to the original melody. With the arpeggios underscoring the entire piece, you can imagine Link starting out stepping forward cautiously, mindful of his surroundings. He searches every room, opens every door, in order to brave through all the obstacles in the maze. With each progress made, Link becomes more sure of himself, more determined, but at the same time the monsters and undead creatures become more terrifying and dangerous. I wanted the entire piece to sound melancholy, because Link knew Zelda was here before him, but was now in captivity.
