My 10th burn! Was so nice to be back out there with everyone again. Thanks to all the amazing people from Dusty Rhino for always making it special and to The Fluffy Cloud crew for linking up their sound. The air is cool and the light is filtered through a canopy of Sitka Spruce and Douglas Fir, Pacific Chorus Frogs crowded in an ephemeral wet-spot seemingly don't know if it's day or night as they sing around the clock here. The river sounds like a soft pillow in the distance, a dull roar that is more comforting than disturbing, fading away behind a biophonic meditation.

As twilight dawns with First light, local birds join the the chorus with the frog. Varied Thrushes with their nasally mysterious alarm-like cry. Pacific Wrens who seemingly believe that everyone needs to hear what they have to say. Song Sparrows with some of the happiest song ever to delight. A Chestnut-backed Chickadee that inspects the microphones, pulling little tufts of the wind protection to pad a nest. Northern Flickers and Chipmunks compete to see who has the best chatter.

All the while, the frogs continue on in cycles of chorused and cycles of silence, punctuated only by the occasional encounter trill or inquiring contact croak.

One of my earliest memories is of being scooped out of bed by the warm hands of my parents and bundled up for a drive in the predawn hours to Cape Canaveral to watch the launch of a rocket into space.  While the memory is vague, the arc of light curving into the mysterious vastness of space remains imprinted on my mind and sparked a young interest in space travel.

A few years later this morphed into a love of science fiction, starting with a young childhood obsession with the original Star Wars series, then later moving to the more sophisticated fare like 2001 and Blade Runner.  The future a reflection of present day conundrums and the container of mysterious worlds at the furthest reaches of our imagination.

When I began selecting and blending these songs and samples together, it was to honor these early fascinations.  But as the world and, seemingly in parallel, my life went through some tumultuous times, it became infused with another, more metaphorical layer related to space travel: journeying through the infinite night towards the great unknown, in search of light and signs of life.

As we travel through the uncertainties of life in a world in chaos, I hope this sonic journey can both reflect and offer a little solace for these times and our collective journey through them.  It takes the darkest night to reveal the millions of points of light shining down upon us.

INNER SPACE

I have been working on a new form of polytemporal documentary with filmmaker Rachel Strickland. The idea is to map different timescales into the range of human perception, not only in image but in sound. The first instance is “Folia” a 24-minute film which centers around street trees on Folsom street in San Francisco, chronicling the activities of a particular 24 hour period. It will be released in late 2016 or early 2017. 

The fast “swooshes” are cars driving by at 60x speed; buses and sidewalk sounds are presented at 20x and 10x speed, while other sounds play in real time.

A warm spring day in the Mission district, San Francisco 2009, at the backyard garden beehive of Tree, an original Digger and radical food activist. I spent several hours deeply immersed in observation of the bees and recording of their sounds… with small microphones in the hive, microphone pairs at its entrance, and following them with microphones. Returning from this experience I felt as though I’d been travelling for weeks in a foreign land, the impression left on me was so strong.

The base field recording of crickets involves a “recording performance” wherein the microphone is moving through the array of crickets and insects at the edge of a Massachusetts wood - static point source sounds thus become spatially animated. This base is superimposed with sounds of street traffic, re-recorded through the tube /membrane resonator of a drum as a kind of distancing factor and musical, tonal frequency generator.

Mechanical clocks made tangible and observable the objective measure of something we had, since the beginning, experienced so ephemerally: the flow of time. To their first users clocks must have seemed like a form of magic: bringing heavenly perfection onto earth. In technological terms, they could be thought of as the great grandfathers of modernity.

Last night midst the corona virus, I had a beautiful dream.  My son Michael had made a musical signal language to communicate with his friends across a large lake.  It sounded algorhythmic, and carried information.  It combined in my mind with a vernal pool with the call of frogs making babies.  I woke with the melody and went right to the studio to make this cut, "Lake Babies" which makes me calm and happy and energized.  I think of it as a positive communication environment as much as it is music. Share if you will. Bruce.
