Originally written for tap-dance choreography as part of WWU New Music/New Dance 2017, Warmer is an exploration of a technique developed by musician Nick Zammuto, in which rhythms are etched into the locked groove at the center of a vinyl record using a razor blade (or any other cutting implement). This process is aided by the use of small paper discs with evenly-spaced markings which are adhered over the record's label and provide different time signatures. However, since one revolution of a record spinning at 33.3 RPM will always take 1.8 seconds, a change in time signature merely results in a different subdivision of the same 1.8 second beat, which can be used to great polyrhythmic effect. Other hands-on creative methods used in this track include using an x-acto knife and a magnifying glass to loop specific grooves, as well as cutting a record in half, flipping one of the halves over and taping it back together so half of each side of the record are on both sides. All of the sounds used in this track were sourced from vinyl records, mostly Reader's Digest compilations of easy listening music from the 70s and 80s. Most of the melodic flute and oboe samples came from a record containing the pieces Density 21.5 and Octandre by Edgard Varèse.
