And then he asked me

Commissioned by Kate Ryder and Jane Chapman - a piece  for harpsichord and prepared piano using Cage's preparations for his 'Sonatas and Interludes'.  When combining the prepared piano with the harpsichord the composer is faced with a set of distinctive individual timbres combined with a far more consistent collection of sounds and dynamic range offered by the harpsichord.  Both instruments are sounding boxes (hence the title) and this piece explores the combination of this range of different sonorities against the more consistent dynamic and timbral range of the harpsichord.  All this is framed within Jeremy's  preoccupation with rhythmic interplay within the context of a continuous pulse of some kind.
