The Butterfly, Movement 2: The Untethering (2021)

"Contrapunctus XV -Canon per Augmentationem in Contrario Motu" was written for the RNCM Chamber Music Festival 2014. Performed at the Manchester Cathedral, 12 Jan 2014.


Contrapunctus XV for flute, clarinet, cello, double bass

Orchestral arrangement for original piano piece "Not a Breath". Based on an exercise from class last spring  (from Comp I @Juilliard Evening Division with Conrad Cummings), this is my attempt to flesh out a lot of the sounds I had compressed from imagination to a piece just for piano. I've never written for a gazillion instruments before, but I think a good deal of this turned out well, if not really fun. Part 1, main theme. 2nd part, which is just oboe and piano, was a really quick, let's-get-done-with-it bit. 3rd part I spent FOREVER on, since it becomes really dense and lush and lots of interesting things happen with you build canons up to such sizes. 4th part and percussion starts making an appearance- this one's just bonkers and I love it. 5th part to the end sees the return of the main theme in a very cinematic way, with the work closing as gently as it began.
