What an impressive repertoire this guy has. He seems to have more of the diverse Currawong repertoire than most Currawongs do. Clearly an old bird, as he's merging/melting calls into each other too. (thanks Jeremy, that was exactly what I needed to hear).

Wonderful! Which device and a microphone you record sound?

While working on a documentary project in Addis Ababa, I was lucky enough to visit several natural sites in Ethiopia. This is a recording from Lake Langano, where many birds and other animals live. 

I was recording on the shore near the fishing village, which you can hear softly in the background. At that time, children were bathing and having fun.

Belgian composer and sound artist Adriaan Swerts announces the release of his debut full-length album One in collaboration with piano and coffee records – a collection of twelve deeply personal compositions that, originally, were not conceived with the idea of ever getting released but that, like shards of ice, slowly floated together and formed an island of music.

Both a life-threatening accident – which caused his disability –and the passing of his grandfather confronted Adriaan with the fragility of life. Thematically, this album deals with the eternal, life fading away, death, and the afterlife. At the same time, it attempts to celebrate the beauty of love, life, nature and all that lives on earth. 

The characteristic sounds on this album are field recordings of natural landscapes Adriaan visited, which he transformed into instruments and used almost solely to compose. The piano and other acoustic instruments such as the harmonium and strings, as old but not forgotten classical friends, are the other elements that accompany these transformed natural sounds. Icelandic glaciers, geysers, Scottish lochs, waterfalls, oceans and more all found a home on this album. In addition, Swerts uses reel-to-reel tape processing to degrade the sound of the recordings and make them sound broken – a reflection of what his body feels like.

The artwork of the album similarly reflects Adriaan's focus on the theme of the fragility of life and nature. The cracks in the ice symbolise how easily something can be broken into pieces – just like what happened to his body after his accident – but can still be a whole. In addition, Adriaan crafted a videoclip for each piece of the album through the process of cymatics – the study of visible sound vibration and the transformational nature of sound and matter. He filmed the sound vibrations caused by his music in water, unveiling beautiful and unique geometric patterns for each composition. 

One comes out digitally and on limited edition CD on the 28th of October, featuring artwork and design by Celia Bayo.

Features the sounds of Black Currawong, Common Bronzewing, Grey Fantail, Crescent Honeyeater, Superb Fairywren, Dusky Robin, Striated Fieldwren, Yellow-throated Honeyeater, Pallid Cuckoo, Tasmanian Boobook, Brown Quail & Masked Lapwing.

Tasmania - Lune Valley Dawn

The bulk of volcanic Mount Meru dominates the Arusha landscape in equatorial East Africa. Looking out from its forested slopes toward the east, its sister volcano, Mt. Kilimanjaro, can be seen on the horizon some 70km distant.

This recording begins in silence under a canopy of tropical forest in the hours before dawn. From far away comes a barely audible murmuring; the huffing of distant colobus monkeys. Like a mexican wave, the sound grows closer, with each successive troupe around the base of the mountain waking the next, until a family of monkeys in the trees overhead begin calling; a wonderful, gruff, barking chorus.

Then it falls silent again. Bush babies call occasionally in the darkness. Soon the dawn birdsong begins, the air becoming filled with the sounds of greenbuls, flycatchers, sunbirds, and groups of colourful turacos which vocalise loudly as they scurry along high branches. Silverey-cheeked hornbills wing overhead, and diurnal cicadas begin buzzing. Birds move around the forest, as do the colobus monkeys, now active and clambering noisily around the treetops.

By late afternoon, other birds are heard, including the dusk singing of an olive thrush. The colobus give their evening chorus and the forest moves imperceptibly into the night.

Superb Lyrebird calling in the early morning, not long after dawn, in the Jamison Valley. This particular area of the Jamison Valley is on the slopes of the Narrow Neck Plateau and is covered in lush, wet sclerophyll forest, which borders a small pocket of rainforest.
Some of the birds the lyrebird mimics in this performance are: Laughing Kookaburra, Satin Bowerbird, Eastern Whipbird, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Lewin's Honeyeater, Pied Currawong, Crimson Rosella, Pilotbird, Australian King Parrot. Many of the odd sounds it makes are pure Lyrebird calls as they do have their own unique repertoire. 
In the background you can hear many Bell Miners twinkling.

A series of recordings made on the occasion of the 2015 Soundcamp for the 24 hour Reveil global dawn chorus braodcast. Our Soundcamp was coordinated by Dawn Scarfe and Veljo Runnel and included guests from the Active Crossover residency. Special thanks to the Palupõhja Nature School for hosting us. Palupõhja is a small village on the Emajõgi river in the center of the Alam-Pedja nature reserve.

This track features the haunting vocalizations of the Common Loon. The ambient "roar" you'll hear is the sound of gentle night breezes swishing through the treetops of large Red Pines nearby. (One critical listener calls this element "sublime.") Recorded late May, 2008. Skies were mostly clear; winds were light and variable; temp. was in the low 50s (F).
