Nyctimystes infrafrenatus, Litoria rubella, Rhinella marina + Litoria caerulea and Ninox rufa in the background. i haven't ID'd the little squeaky frog.

Recorded at the edge of the littoral rainforest, not far from Burning Palms beach.
This sound was created by two trees rubbing against each other in the wind.
Recorded around 9am on the 29th of September, 2014.

Two Trees Rubbing Against Each Other On The South Coast

Superb Lyrebird calling in the early morning, not long after dawn, in the Jamison Valley. This particular area of the Jamison Valley is on the slopes of the Narrow Neck Plateau and is covered in lush, wet sclerophyll forest, which borders a small pocket of rainforest.
Some of the birds the lyrebird mimics in this performance are: Laughing Kookaburra, Satin Bowerbird, Eastern Whipbird, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Lewin's Honeyeater, Pied Currawong, Crimson Rosella, Pilotbird, Australian King Parrot. Many of the odd sounds it makes are pure Lyrebird calls as they do have their own unique repertoire. 
In the background you can hear many Bell Miners twinkling.

Superb Lyrebird In The Jamison Valley, Blue Mountains

Eastern Olive Toads (Amietophrynus garmani) sing in hypnotic polyrhythms on a windy night by a waterhole in the savannah.
This was the most intense part of a chorus which lasted for about 2 hours from beginning to end. At the beginning there were other frogs calling (Kassina senegalensis) but they seemed to give up once the toads began to dominate. I will post a much longer excerpt from this recording at a later date.
Recorded around 9pm on the 25th of November, 2014, at Mmabolela Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa during the 'Sonic Mmabolela' residency organized by Francisco Lopez & James Webb.

Eastern Olive Toad Chorus

Very short recording of Heleioporus australiacus. This is a very large (100mm) frog which is considered vulnerable by the IUCN. This is the first time that I have ever heard this frog!
This was recorded by a very dry, barely flowing creek on the lushly forested cliffs which looks over the South Pacific ocean in the south-eastern coast Royal National Park, just as the sun had completely set. I placed the recorder above the frogs burrow in the creek but unfortunately I placed it so close that most of the recording is distorted!
Recorded with an Olympus LS-5 as that is all that I had on me at the time.

Above & Below The Limpopo River At Dawn

A few Red-crowned Toadlets calling in a small water filled ditch by the side of the track on a cool Summer's night. Recorded in Royal National Park, in the rainforest near the Hacking River, around 9.30pm on the 29th of January, 2015. You can also hear some Common Eastern Froglets (Crinia signifera) in the middle of the recording.
Red-crowned Toadlets are considered Vulnerable by the IUCN.

Red-crowned Toadlets (Pseudophryne australis)

Common Eastern Froglets (Crinia Signifera) calling in vegetation around a tiny pool of water after recent heavy rain. Recorded in Royal National Park, in the rainforest near the Hacking River, around 9.40pm on the 29th of January, 2015. This is a very common frog in the Sydney area and will live and lay tadpoles in almost any place that there is water, even contaminated sewerage water. I hear these frogs calling at a polluted creek near my house nearly every night so it's nice to hear them calling in the forest in clean water.

River Red Gum Forest In The Outback

Standing on my tip toes to record a droning light, a rattling door at night in a motel, liquid moving and electricity humming through fridges, the consuming sound of dirt roads, ravens haunting a cemetery just after dawn, traffic lights ticking, my father snores loudly, moths buzz around a lone light attracting them in the dark of the desert, birds sing in the pre-dawn and wood rubs in mallee woodland, apostlebirds fight for bread at a rest stop, red-tailed black cockatoo's shriek at a petrol station, little corella's scream at dusk by a supermarket, the near silence of the desert at night.

This is a composition made with sounds that I recorded during my brief trip in the Australian outback in early May this year with my father. All sounds were recorded with the internal mics of my little handheld during our time driving along the seemingly endless roads through the desert, our stops at the remote rural towns and motels and brief trips out into the desert itself.  
All these recordings that I made as we traveled reflect my experience during this time far greater than the nature recordings I made with my far more expensive and far less portable equipment.

These sounds were recorded across three states, South Australia, Victoria & New South Wales in these places: Adelaide, Mildura, Mungo National Park, Broken Hill, White Cliffs, Wilcannia and the vast roads and desert between them.

(Autumn) 5 Days In The Outback

Aquatic insects sing in the wetland by the Princes Motorway, reeds rub together.. the sounds of the air emerge, wind sings through leaves, fence wires, pool signs, oceanic creatures softly mumble while evening falls upon the sea.
Recorded on the 14th of September, 2015.

I Spent A Few Hours In Kiama...

As the light fades and the full moon rises.. the nocturnal cricket song begins and fluctuates, Crested Pigeons flutter about in the arid tree's of the Mallee woodland and Pied Butcherbirds sparsely sing their dusk melodies as the wind breezes through leaves and wood.
Recorded on the 4th of May, 2015 in the outback.

Autumnal Dusk At Mungo National Park, NSW, Australia

Grasshoppers stridulate, sparse bird song reverberates across the arid hills while the ever-present wind sings through the desert she-oaks, one of the most beautiful sounding tree's I have ever heard. 
Recorded on a lukewarm afternoon in the Australian outback, not far from the "city" of Broken Hill. 6th of May, 2015.

(Autumn) Quiet Afternoon In The Barrier Ranges

Underneath the still, coastal She-oaks an adult Glossy Black Cockatoo and her young softly sing and hauntingly creak as the light begins to fade. Once common, these Cockatoo's arebecoming quite rare and are now locally extinct in many areas across Australia, especially NSW, due to vast clearing of the habitats they depend on, particularly those rich in Casuarina's whose seeds provide them with food.
Within the surrounding marsh, Bibrons Toadlets chant polyphonically as they prepare for the night, accompanied by a gentle orchestra of crickets, birds of the woodland and distant waves crashing on Durras Beach.

Autumn Afternoon In The Marshy Woodlands By Durras Lake

A subtle, cool morning in a small pocket of Mallee woodland surrounded by saltbush desert near Lake Mungo.
Wind flows through the Eucalyptus leaves and wood, Ravens, Magpies and Pied Butcherbirds sparsely sing in the background, while a group of the aptly named Noisy Miners fly into the trees above and loudly chatter.
Recorded in May, 2015. Mungo National Park, NSW, Australia.

(Autumn) Quiet Morning In The Mallee Woodland

The deepest quiet I have ever experience in my life was on this cool night in Mungo National Park. It was so quiet the sounds of my own body could be heard above anything else. I only would sometimes hear the high pitched calls of microbats and the minute sounds of a soft wind through the wood of the bushes.
While I was in the saltbush desert which was almost silent, my microphones were out about a kilometer away in a small pocket of Mallee woodland where a few sounds could still be heard.
Crickets faintly chirp, feral goats murmur in the surrounds, the infrequent vocal drumming of Emu's resonates against the dry earth and the haunting calls of Owlet-nightjars sporadically fills the cool, arid air.

Dozens of Bibron's Toadlets sing on a beautiful cool night in the marsh beside Durras Lake. In the surrounds there were hundreds of these toadlets.. accompanied by many insects, the occasional microbat and the lovely waves on Durras beach.
