A sentient chill passes through and awakens a resting body in the cathedral. Faintly heard in its wake are repurposed tape-looped fragments of commercial Halloween kitsch that excavate earliest memories of the season. The sound is eventually lent an atemporal quality by an overlaying of chorused strings, occasional voice, chilly electronic tones, possible magnetic tape EVP. Karl Raymar brings you this personal soundtrack of the season where, as years pass, we more deeply contemplate and celebrate the shift of natural cycles, acknowledge that Death is inevitable but also part of the process in which new things grow; where, with joyful and serious intent, we pay tribute to those we were fortunate to know in the brief window of our lives, an understanding of impermanence to deepen our appreciation of the present moment. Time collapses in the glow of static, leaves redden and decay, souls march through the woods, we light a candle and ring a bell.

Do Not Eat My Friend -- Mantra Version

"Magnet Blues" presents Zhu Wenbo and Zhu Songjie’s unique and utterly bizarre take on American blues, as if filtered through layered variations of darkness. Throughout the recording, we hear barely audible vocals, minimalist, smart, and subtle guitar work, and the folkish atmosphere of what sounds like distant train activity and dying radios. Instrumentation is notable here: Songjie uses the peculiar Casio EG-5 electric guitar, with a built-in cassette deck, while also playing harmonica. Wenbo plays a Fisher-Price toy cassette player, sings, and also plays harmonica. Throughout bursts of noise and rustling midrange timbres, Zhu and Zhu navigate an understated, focused, and dreamlike realm of song and texture.

Cylob Sonic Research (please read description)

Recorded in a dry river bed on the Limpopo river at around 5.45am, about an hour after dawn, on the 28th of November, 2014. 
The dominant birds in this recording are a group of Natal Spurfowl's (Pternistis natalensis), other species calling include: Woodland Kingfisher (Halcyon senegalensis), African Hoopoe (Upupa africana), Red-eyed Dove (Streptopelia semitorquata), Bearded Woodpecker (Dendropicos namaquus), Tropical Boubou (Laniarius aethiopicus), Green Woodhoopoe (Phoeniculus purpureus), Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca), African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer), Southern Boubou (Laniarius ferrugineus). There are quite a few other birds calling that I haven't identified yet, mainly all the tweety birds which I always find difficult to identify.

Morning At Umzumbi

A few cicadas (possibly Oxypleura quadraticollis) call together, slowly ascending to an incredibly ear-piercing chorus in which microtones blend in and out of each other to create a surreal high pitched drone which soon descends to quiet. They did this on and off for about an hour with intervals of 5 minutes or so between. This is the last time they called before they fell silent until dawn the next morning, in which they called so loud that they almost distorted my microphones, it was about 2-3 times as loud as the climax in this recording! In the background you can hear the rhythmic chopping sounds of a group of African Scops Owls (Otus senegalensis) calling in the gallery forest by the river bed.
Recorded in a dry section of the Limpopo River, at Mmabolela Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa, around 11.30pm on the 24th of November, 2014.

Cicadas In The Middle Of The Night

A composition made from sounds recorded recently in Kiama, during a short break while I was heading down to Murramarang National Park on the south coast of NSW. 
A cool Autumn wind sings melodiously through the wires at the viewing platform for the famous Kiama Blowhole, which was exploding large amounts of coastal water out as I recorded this, surrounded by many spectators. Layered with hydrophone recordings I got in a large rock pool a hundred or so metres away. These two recordings were gathered within 30 minutes of each other and since they are so close I feel that they are intimately related. They live side by side every day, yet we would never be able to hear them together without the aid of listening devices such as these microphones.
Recorded between 2:30 and 3:00pm on the 28th of March, 2015.
