Spada is back, with a new club dress and with a turn in between deep and tech house. It’s a new sound, where dance atmospheres are wrapped up with gloominess and mystery. Guitars get it started; then the track goes through synths and trombone. It’s a journey, from the underground to the big audience. And Pete Tong just started it with an exclusive and worldwide premiere on BBC Radio 1.

The DJ and producer of “Catchfire (Sun Sun Sun)”, “Feels Like Home (Red Velvet Dress)”, “Cool Enough”, who already remixed Robin Schulz, Klingande, ZHU, Roger Sanchez, Fritz Kalkbrenner, once again proves himself as one of the most innovative and original names in the dance scene. Spada’s music takes wing from Italy and is spread all over in the world. Now it’s floating in space too, with this “Lost in Space”.

A recent stripped-down, ethereal dub version of the DJ Shadow feat. Little Dragon remix I originally did a few years ago. Played all the guitars myself and all those soaring, whispy whale mating calls are actually my man REED MATHIS on his bass guitar through his patented effect configuration. No drums, more room for the analog delays to breath, or swim, between the notes.

UPDATE: The winners of the DJ Shadow remix contest have been announced! I'm not one of them, but it was great to hear the ones that shadow picked. So glad Archive's Waltz version was in the ranks, played that on my KCRW show on Wednesday. I'm not bummed one bit, everyone who Shadow picked killed it in their own way, and since I only set out to make what I consider to be a beautiful song... I feel successful in that. This year, the legendary "High Priestess of Soul", Ms NINA SIMONE, would be 80 years old. A woman who changed the social and political fabric of America with her fearless songs, her yearning voice, and her raw, worn soul.

Perhaps what has always moved me about Nina's body of work is that her recordings, even her fame in itself, were all auxiliary - just a means to support her continuing education and aspirations of becoming a classical pianist. Her songs had their own meanings and subjects of course, but by reflecting on her life's work as a whole, you can plot the points between these songs like a constellation. They were rungs on the ladder of her ever-climbing journey. You can hear in each recording a completely pure reflection of how she was feeling - passionate, strong, devoted, frisky, suspicious, proud, or just downright tired.

THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, JULY 5TH 2013, Los Angeles gathers for a sure-to-be-epic evening of free music and revelry around this particularly authentic high priestess. Join us all at GRAND PERFORMANCES for "YOUNG, GIFTED, and NINA", featuring LA's deepest musical luminaries from the Jazz, Soul, Blues, Poetry and recording world as we come together for this majestic tribute.

This event is produced with unmatched dedication by JONATHAN RUDNICK, and the visionary music direction of DEXTER STORY,  the men behind last year's also epic "PEACE GO WITH YOU, GIL" tribute to Gil Scott-Heron. Yours truly will be opening the evening with an invocation DJ set, and speaking throughout the show.

My plan was to not remix, but re-play the song in a full live setting, as if in 1975 Bowie recorded the original and then flew to Brooklyn (or even Jamaica) to cut another take with my players. Everything was recorded 100% analog to tape. All on equipment that was available before 1975. My approach was to take influence of the Jamaican musicians (and recording styles) of the mid-seventies, and their infatuation with American Soul music. If you dig it, that would be great. Knowing that BOWIE digs it, I’m over the moon.

Wonderwheel Recordings is proud to present Karimba Diabolic Remixed, a brand new remix album from the Peruvian future roots collective Novalima. Founded by four friends from Lima with a shared passion for both traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture, Novalima searches for the common ground between past and future, between tradition and innovation. Being one of their home countries hottest exports, (where they have gone platinum) their efforts have a helped bridge the divide between the Peruvian mainstream and the Afro-Peruvian community, a minority population that has struggled against discrimination and the threat of cultural dissolution for generations. Outside of Peru, Novalima has garnered critical acclaim from mainstream and underground media alike, a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, and a featured spot in cult filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s hit Mexploitation movie Machete. 

Here on Karimba Diabolic Remixed, Novalima has hand selected some of their favorite remixers to re-interpret last year’s Karimba album to their own vision. The choice of remixers also reflects Novalima’s global appeal in the Latin diaspora worldwide. The UK is represented with well known West London producer Seiji’s heavy synth-based four-to-the-floor reworking of “Mamaye”, and UK / Brazilian supergroup Da Lata giving us a rootsy swinging version of “Malivio Son”. As it’s recently become a hotbed of Latin infused dance music and culture, California is heavily represented with remixes from KCRW / AfroFunke DJ and Los Angeles mainstay Jeremy Sole fleshes out “Macaco” into a smooth call and response affair. SF based Acid Jazz legend DJ Smash delivers a squelchy, bouncy version of “Diablo”, while Bay Area veteran band Afrolicious freaks “Zarambe” into a dancefloor joint equally influenced by house music and Fela Kuti. LA/NYC DJ Sabo reinterprets “Diablo” with his signature deep and dirty Moombahton style, while Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza takes “Festejo” into swirling, psychedelic house vibe. NYC DJ producer and Wonderwheel label head Nickodemus takes “Mamaye” into bass and percussion heavy dancefloor territory, while Novalima affiliated DJ collective Coba Soundsystem deliver varied takes on “Festejo” and “Malivio Son”. Also included are remixes from Barcelona’s AndyLoop and Los Chicos Altos and deep house producer Xacosa. As an added bonus, the album contains one brand new, unreleased Novalima tracks – “Payande”.
