Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Thursday morning (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 2nd November: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch384

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud GO tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks that have been previously submitted and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

Caught Up & Confused

elkyn is 22 year old song writer and multi-instrumentalist Joseph Donnelly. He writes songs that are an acute reflection of his beautiful heart with carefully crafted lyrics erupting with honesty and intricately finger-picked guitars.

Joseph began writing the music that would become elkyn while at University in Leeds (where he now calls home), recording his songs with his brother during weekend visits to the family home in York.

Family is embedded in elkyn and Like a family, the songs envelope you in a trusting warmth; Joseph lays himself bare, as his honest songs slowly welcome and wash over you. 

Joseph’s songs are a personal reflection on relationships, loss and growth, all told with the openness of family, making them an equal measure of affecting, compelling, and deeply addicting.

Horrible Person

Luna is the fourth song of Aenigmata, an ongoing project setting riddles by Saint Aldhelm, and is sung by Meg Holch. The text – about the moon – is as follows:

Nunc ego cum pelagi fatis communibus insto
Tempora reciprocis convolvens menstrua cyclis.
Ut mihi lucifluae decrescit gloria formae,
Sic augmenta latex redundans gurgite perdit.

The translation (by Judy Nesbit) is:

I stand here now sharing the destiny of the sea,
Rolling the monthly times around in repeating cycles.
Just as the glory of my light-streaming shape diminishes,
So the flowing tide loses the peaks in its flood.

This is the first – but not the last – nocturnal scene to appear in Aenigmata; here, gentle rain falls on a calm moonlit seascape.

Luna (feat. Meg Holch)

A song that was written during lockdown, from the inside looking out.

The lyrics were inspired by a baby blackbird that was found sick, with a crossed beak, by our vocalist in her garden. She nursed it back to health by feeding it every day for 6 weeks. Our vocalist used to wait by the window during lockdown - the looking glass - and wait for the bird to arrive each morning. 

The song also explores the concept of identity: if you can just believe, you will see your true self in the mirror.
