Doing Time With Bill Spencer & Sholto

May 15th marks the birthdate of one of our favorite DJs - Roy Thode. Technically masterful, pioneering some of the most progressive methods in DJing whilst manifesting an exceptionally educated and tasteful selection of music, Roy Thode is truly an artist when it comes to the craft of DJing. Personally, as DJs, we've learned so much from listening to Roy Thode, 40 years later he continues to inspire us in such relevant ways. 

Roy Thode, a native New Yorker from Long Island, moved to the city in his early 20’s after establishing his DJ skills as a young man growing up in Wantaugh. Roy was perhaps best known for being the DJ for “Saturday Nights at the Ice Palace” in Cherry Grove. His NYC DJ career was highlighted with residencies at both Studio 54 and The Saint however it was the Long Island Gay club scene that fueled and created the foundation for Roy’s illustrious career as perhaps one of the best technical DJ’s of his era.

This mix was recorded at the Ice Palace - in many ways, his home. Being able to share this previously unreleased mix is a tremendous honor for us and we hope you can appreciate this as much as we do. A huge thank you to Marsha Stern for working with us and making this little project a reality.

Up next we have Manuel Darquart with an eclectic offering for Bside. Originating from New Zealand, the duo first released in 2016 before moving to London. Since the move to the big smoke, they have released on Coastal Haze, Childsplay and CC Disco’s first compilation. The pair have also released on the renowned  Dutch label Infinite Pleasure and London’s Wolf which led to a remix EP from non other than Don Carlos. Over time they have played at Corsica, The Cause & Ministry of Sound and an all-nighter at the famous Spiritland.

Kick-back and enjoy this classy contribution to the 'Bside Incoming' series with the NZ duo delivering a warm, breezy selection spanned over the course of two fine hours.

Once again we are gladly able to present you with an insight into the record collection of a truly passionate musician constantly seeking out new sounds and influences. This time from a Bristol based artist whose an integral part of the vibrant underground scene. It’s great to hear so much locally sourced and UK pressed vinyl and support for the city’s rich network of digging spots. 

Admin is known for a broad spectrum of musical influences, utilising Bristol’s fine musical heritage, as well as expanding the horizon with his own deep knowledge of soul, disco, and jazz that truly shines through in his Bside mix.

His productions are a tasteful blend of his disco jazz influences and a modern electronic style. Enter a deep astral soundscape with this Bside to his Spirit Boogie release:

The ever-prolific Ed Upton aka DMX Krew is up next on Utter with 'Turn It On', a four-track EP of Level 42 cover versions. Yes, you read that right... as if 2020 couldn't get any stranger!

This is no exercise in irony though. This record is a true labour of love for Ed, a sincere tribute to a band he adored as a youngster. The original Level 42 tracks he has covered - 'Turn It On', 'Love Games' and '43' - all appeared on their acclaimed self-titled debut album way back in 1981, which also featured the talents of a young Wally Badarou and Atmosfear's Leroy Williams.

Ed has stayed faithful to the tracks' excellent arrangements, swapping out live instruments for drum machines and synths, vocals for vocoders.

The result is a record that retains the original material's brit-funk charm but with that unmistakable DMX Krew electro-funk and boogie flavour. It breathes new life into these classic tracks without deviating from what made them so catchy and fun in the first place. We hope they put a smile on your face too.

Label and home to degenerates, Public Release Recordings was kicked off by Eug in the early 2000’s, but was more formally introduced as an independent record label in 2009.
