Feral One Records is truly living up to its namesake in 2023.

Following the release of Creating Space, the epic, 17-track LP from FO boss Longstocking, the label is going even more feral with the 18-track compilation, Seattle Volume 2.

Simply put, with these two releases back-to-back, no one can possibly attempt to deny the value and vitality of Seattle’s dance music community.

The scene is strong. The scene is diverse, and Seattle Volume 2 demonstrates this truth with a connective tissue of serene melodies (and one foghorn tech house banger, but those are still welcome on the dancefloor).

Whether it be a melodic bassline like that found in Leon The Lover’s “Show Up,” the rhythmic melodies of Tony H’s “With The Guys” or the string serenades of Snapdragon’s “What Is Closure Anyway,” these artists are using sound to share their stories, and though each story is different, they all start in the same city.

Longstocking, of course, makes an entry into the compilation, this time with a classic soaring house tune entitled “Skip,” that slowly builds from tight-knit beginnings into a lush and infectious groove. The name of the song is apt given its placement as the second track on compilation—almost immediately communicating that none of the 18 pieces of music to come are skippable.

Breaks are essential to the Feral One catalog, and so there are more than a few offerings of the breakbeat variety including “Luna” by Miss Min.D which finds its sense of melody in the spaces between the drums. Blipping and bopping around different pieces of sound design like a spaceship flying through a musical asteroid field.

But Feral One, and the city of Seattle, are, at their core, unbound by genres and other such restrictions. That sense of freedom comes into form on “Call It By Name” by Hanssen. Whatever “rules” anyone attached to electronic music up until now do not matter. The unchained rhythms and drum patterns defy any sense of cohesion, and yet it’s that defiance that solidifies the track.

In truth, that defiance is what solidifies the entire compilation and the scene to which it is dedicated.

In a realm shrouded in perpetual gloom, lived Silas, a pessimist of the highest caliber. His heart, like a withered leaf, clung to the bitter end, convinced that life held nothing but misery and despair.

Each morning, he would awaken with a heavy sigh, already anticipating the misfortunes that the day would bring. The sun's golden rays held no warmth for him; instead, they served as a cruel reminder of the oppressive weight of existence.

As the hours passed, Silas would retreat to his solitary abode, where the walls seemed to whisper secrets of doom. Every creak and groan sent shivers down his spine, as if the very fabric of reality conspired against him. Even the simple act of breathing became a struggle, laden with the weight of impending misfortune.

One fateful evening, as Silas sat in his dimly lit room, a piercing knock echoed through the silence. His heart skipped a beat, for he knew instinctively that nothing good could come of this interruption.

Summoning a semblance of courage, he opened the door to reveal a stranger standing there, a gentle smile playing on her lips. 'Excuse me, sir,' she said, 'but I couldn't help but notice your gloomy countenance. Would you care to join me for a walk?'

Silas hesitated, torn between his innate pessimism and a flicker of curiosity. Finally, he relented, thinking that nothing could possibly be worse than wallowing in his own misery.

As they stepped outside, Silas was astonished by the beauty of the night. The stars twinkled like celestial diamonds, casting an ethereal glow upon the sleeping town. The air was crisp and invigorating, filling his lungs with a sense of freshness he had long forgotten.

Slowly but surely, Silas's pessimism began to waver. The stranger, named Anya, possessed an unwavering optimism that seemed to defy all logic. She shared stories of resilience, hope, and kindness, painting a vivid tapestry of possibilities that Silas had never considered.

With each step they took, Silas felt a glimmer of light piercing the darkness within him. The weight that had burdened his shoulders for so long seemed to lighten, replaced by a sense of wonder and possibility.

By the time they returned to his doorstep, Silas realized that his perspective had irrevocably changed. He thanked Anya for her kindness and vowed to embrace the unknown with a newfound hope.

And so, from that day forward, Silas, the pessimist, became known as Silas, the eternal optimist. For in the darkest of times, he had discovered that even a glimmer of light has the power to illuminate the path ahead.

Narcissists is a independent electronic music project from Preston, Lancashire. Established in 2022, and releasing their debut album Opening Move the same year.

Opening Move, combines retro influences with an energetic, modern rock sound, not disimilar from Harry Styles or The Strokes. 

Opening Move saw some exposure upon release on Wythenshawe FM Radio, The Amos Madra Show and Amazing Radio Afternoons.

In November 2022, performing live atop an art gallery in Manchester, Narcissists made their live debut at the ABC Building, playing on the roof of the gallery in the glass amphitheatre as part of an event organised by House of Art and Heads Magazine.

Narcissists were also interviewed and featured in an article published by Blossom Magazine, an organisation also based in Manchester.

In December 2022, Narcissists performed at The Ferret, a legendary live music venue in Preston, Lancashire. Supporting popular rock band Sugarstone in a bid to save struggling venues affected by the pandemic.

In 2023, Narcissists released King's Gambit, their second studio album. The album featured a post-modern, electronically woven sound. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of electronic styles.

Dark Skies was used as the official soundtrack to popular Internet soap opera "Skew Bridge," crafted by the team from award winning playwriter Jim Cartwright.
