Alpha Mound & Tidsrymd "En plats i solen" (release date: June 17)

Alpha Mound & Tidsrymd is a musical collaboration that has been going on since 2019. The first single "Slow-wave Sleep/Dröm i färg" was released in 2020 and now their debut album "A place in the sun" will be released on June 17, 2023. The music moves between post-rock, ambient, kraut and dream pop. It is instrumental music, using vocals without words. With vivid song titles and musical visualization, they take listeners through different imagined scenes. The album is released on streaming services and CD through Stålverk Records.


Alpha Mound

Alpha Mound is Joakim Westlund's solo project. Since his first release in 2012 he has produced many albums and EP:s under this moniker, sometimes through collaborations with other artists. The music is usually ambient with sound design as a central element.


Tidsrymd

Tidsrymd is Johan Ohlsson's project, producing electronic music since 2018. The music moves between kraut, minimalism and ambient. 


Alpha Mound & Tidsrymd "En plats i solen"

The album "En plats i solen" was mostly made by the duo in Joakim's studio in Sandviken. Later on guest musicians have been brought in to build the large soundscape that makes up the record. The album features Sofia Costa Nordvall (vocals), Karolina Dahl (vocals), Peter Fredriksson (trombone), Martin Hällgren (drums) and Ida Norrman (vocals).


About some of the tracks:

Godmorgon framtid was the first single from the album, which came with a remix by Slim Vic. It is inspired by an old coffee table book from 1984, with the same name, in which Bengt-Arne Vedin and Bengt Preston painted titillating visions of the future and predicted such things as "electronic express letters" and robotic lawnmowers. It is an energetic, hopeful and uplifting song.

Dagsverk is a work song with a swagger, post rock guitars and humming sing-along chorus, kind of a spiritual for the 2020s. 

Vid tystnadens rand takes us to atmospheric ambient with quietly humming vocals (a bit like Enya). Alpha Mound plays a bowed guitar, which adds a kind of quiet drama to the song.

Östersjön paints a dystopian dark ambience to soft, jazzily stroked drums. We see the song as a bittersweet musical depiction of a rather ruined place, where beauty and tragedy sings side by side.

En plats på solen is a brutal song that contrasts the uplifting title track. But instead of beaches and leisure, we imagine solar storms and extreme heat. The composition is inspired by the title track of the 1984 Dune film and Edvard Grieg's "The Death of Asa" from the Peer Gynt suite, but filtered through the usual punk/indie racket.

Program Note
Tagundnachtgleiche (Equinox) was created on the occasion of a composition competition for brass quintets announced by the publishing house Furore Verlag in 2017.
At the beginning of 2023, I decided to record the piece in a recording studio and to make it available to the public. The trumpeter Bernhard Plagg was kind enough to take on the project. He put together a brass quintet, organised rehearsal dates, etc.
The composition consists of two elements that alternate or interpenetrate each other. On the one hand, composed, notated music, harmonic and rhythmic in the broadest sense. And on the other, improvised music, mainly consisting of differentiated, nuanced noises and representing a kind of random music, like random sounds in nature.

SHORT INTERVIEW

1.) What unique qualities of brass instruments do you aim to highlight in your composition?

My composition consists of two different parts: composed music, which is rhythmic and harmonic in the broadest sense, and improvised music, which consists exclusively of noises and contains aleatoric elements. I had given the musicians a list of playing techniques with details such as hissing sounds, frullato, clicking sounds, whistling, drumming with the fingers on the sound tube and the like. I wanted to show the fantastic things you can do with brass instruments, apart from playing them conventionally

2.) Did you draw on any traditional brass idioms — such as fanfares or chorales — and how did you choose to either embrace or subvert them?

When composing, I actually proceeded quite intuitively, without giving it much thought. The result was optimistic, joyful music. The harmony constantly modulates along the circle of fifths. Every few seconds, another accidental is added, resulting in a continuous circling.
I wanted to counter this with a modern, avant-garde contrast. The noisy, improvised passages are quite exciting and at times ironic or witty. The brief was to create a random music like in nature. However, the composed parts are actually also avant-garde, and often both – the composed and the improvised – permeate each other.

3.) What composers, traditions, or personal experiences informed your work on BRASS TACKS VOL. 3?

I believe that Tagundnachtgleiche is a bit influenced by Bach, although I cannot explain it further. And I also have a lot of experience with improvised music

4.) If you achieve instant mastery over any instrument in the brass family, what would you pick?

Tuba, probably. Or, tenor horn. In any case, one of the lower brass instruments with a soft, voluminous, deep sound.

Recorded 8 years ago. Now if I were political (but I'm not even though I sound like I am, as it's impossible to address humanitarian issues without sounding political) I'd likely be categorised as a Left Wing Progressive, but fact is, I distrust all lawmakers, I strongly believe their main motivations are power, prestige and privilege, that they all serve, and seek to preserve, the interests of society's elite! I don't think Obama did enough to level the playing field, and that left the door open for opportunist and evil shit Trump, although I do have a higher opinion of Obama now than I did back then, but he should have spoken out more when he had the chance, he could have done a lot more to open doors for the black community for one thing.
So the lyrics in this tune are more a reflection of how I view all lawmakers, and the so-called cream of society, those who never had,  or lost, the ability to relate to the rest of us!
