A French artist who characterises a hugely impressive melodic sound, Clawz SG is a very welcome Proton Music debutant with "Domuyo". Two original tracks backed by high-profile remixes from India and Germany complete a compelling picture.

An artist finding a home for his music on some of the finest underground imprints including Traum, Natura Viva and almost a century of production credits for the globally renowned Steyoyoke, Sylvain Guiraud has been at the vanguard of the melodic techno sound for almost five years after a debut for Parquet in June 2014. Now debuting on Proton, "Domuyo" is a beautifully crafted affair, full of analogue melodic flourishes. Characterised by a dominant beat and ticking percussive groove, a rippling freeform motif evolves from the early stages into sublime sequence at the breakdown, full of emotion and nuance. A rasping bassline adds depth and character to the sonic collage to create a glorious and unique character. "Mauna Kea" continues the strong melodic narrative with a hypnotically shimmering motif revealing itself in the upper-mid frequency range. Simultaneously a raw bassline full of analogue power makes its presence felt in clever counterpoint, while a searing pad pulsates gently into the breakdown and beyond. A techno rhythmic framework adds aural glue in a work of genuine sonic beauty.

From the sprawling city of Pune in Western India, Shrinivas Sundar has shone like a beacon with his Color Ray pseudonym. Involved in dance music since the age of 15, a considered approach to his craft "inspired by guitar reverberations echoing in his mind", has seen a clutch of impressive releases for the likes of Electronic Tree and Juicebox Music, supported by Hernan Cattaneo and Sahar Z. Two remixes of Biologik in 2012 and Andre Sobota in 2016 have showcased the Color Ray sound and it is a pleasure to welcome him to Proton Music with a stunning reworking of "Domuyo" that glistens with hypnotic sonic beauty from the opening phase. Joined by a rich, pulsating bassline, a new lead line drifts across the upper frequencies before the track explodes into life with a striking dancefloor rhythm. Building in phases across a ten-minute odyssey, the infectious melodic and rhythmic framework is joined by a collage of accents that create a classy remix that is certain to find favour across global dance floors.

Cutting his teeth with DJ sets and live shows in Berlin's techno capital, Jonas Saalbach has found success across the global dance floors in such hotspots as Dubai and London. 70 production credits for Einmusika plus work for Bedrock, Kattermukke and Moodmusic tells another story of Saalbach's genuine talent and affable personality and it is an honour to welcome him to Proton Music. Taking a typically sophisticated approach to his craft, the Jonas Saalbach remix is a glorious variation on "Manua Kea". Redolent in powerful rhythmic framework and hypnotic percussive groove, elements from Clawz SG's original flow across the mid-range while a raft of new production material oozes quality. Building elegantly to the mid-point, the track erupts into life at 3 minutes 30 with a new percussion melody to take the track on a new and vibrant path.

With volcanic power, "Domuyo" explodes into life alongside remixes from Color Ray and Jonas Saalbach.

An artist with a 24-carat gold reputation across the underground dance industry, Rick Pier O'Neil return to Particles with "Shining". Remixes come from UK and Belgian producers.

Working with such global superstars as Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer and Lenny Kravitz, Rick Pier O'Neil went on to find a passion for the underground scene with his RPO and Garbage Records providing an outlet for his own work and a plethora of renowned artists. Furthermore, work for the likes of JOOF, Bonzai Progressive and Clubsonica have kept the Frenchman dining at the industry's top-table. A regular for Proton Music and Particles, the "One Side of the Underground" series and O'Neil's collaborative work with Desaturate has seen a clutch of original EPs hit both labels. With a trademark driving beat and rapid-fire hit-hat percussion, "Shining" immediately impresses. Building with each phrase, a subterranean sub-bass soon joins the fray while a gated synth groove adds a steely edge. Hitting its stride, from the breakdown O'Neil's immaculate production technique is in full flow as female vocal phrasing of the title and a trance-inspired motif make their presence felt in the third movement to devastating effect.

Another stalwart of the club scene, Steve Haines has created a sizeable niche for himself with a huge body of work under his own name. Creating a buzz around his Bluum moniker, a debut for UV in the shape of February 2018's "Glide" has been followed by regular appearances for the Paul Thomas run imprint with other high-profile releases on JOOF and mau5trap. A January 2019 remix of Izzet saw a Particles debut for Bluum as he now works his magic on "Shining" through a remix characterised by a glorious analogue bassline with all the characteristics of a filtered and modulated Moog. Using O'Neil's components to scintillating effect, familiar melodic refrains can be heard while a rich laid-back groove forms a strong foundation. A shimmering arpeggio makes a play in the third movement as Bluum's array of additional production material is a work of sonic art.

Describing himself as "the musical reincarnation of a Belgian artist with more than a decade of experience", Naethan has performed at festivals including Tomorrowland and Extrema Outdoor with releases on the likes of Suara and Rockets and Ponies. A nascent production career under his Naethan soubriquet saw an October 2018 debut on Nico Morano's Atmosphere Records before going on to feature on LW Recordings, Nothing But and Sound Avenue. Making his Particles debut, Naethan's intelligent use of O'Neil's remix parts sees him retaining the core melodic elements of "Shining". Using the rich flowing synth lines to maximum effect, the Belgian extends them with an impressive new chord progression that takes the original in a new melodic direction. A crisp rhythmic shell and mule-like kick create a dancefloor vibe in a striking reworking from the seasoned star that explodes into life post-breakdown.

A "Shining" light in the world of dance music, Rick Pier O'Neil continues to impress, ably supported by Bluum and Naethan.

Always looking at dance music through an original lens, Darin Epsilon's ground-breaking label now introduces a new series. Designed to showcase the wealth of global talent within the underground fraternity, "Perspectives Around the World, Vol. 1" presents a quartet of new tracks from renowned artists across North America, South America, Europe, and Australia.

Austin Leeds has been involved in the upper echelons of dance music for 20 years. A rare talent, appearances on Bedrock thrust the Miami-based producer into the limelight before going on to feature on the likes of Vandit, Spinnin, and Black Hole. Joining forces with Danko Skystone on the wonderfully crafted "Day Break", the Australian is a renowned producer and audio engineer who has seen his music supported by a cast list that includes Hernan Cattaneo, Max Graham, D-Nox and Beckers, Dubfire, Paul van Dyk, Markus Schulz, Sandra Collins, and Epsilon himself. Characterized by an intricate groove and deep house sensibilities, a chest-thumping beat and cavernous bassline lay the foundations for a coruscating flute melody to flow across the 8 minute track. Shimmering in freeform glory and making its mark in the stripped back breakdown, the cleverly woven track extols the considerable virtues of the Austin Leeds and Danko Skystone production houses.

Long-term collaborator with fellow countryman Deep Fog, Krzysztof Kupczakiewicz has also found solo success through his Cream (PL) production moniker. A resident DJ across the clubs of his Jaroslaw hometown, the Polish national has found himself at the vanguard of the underground dance movement with his trademark sound finding its way on to the likes of JOOF, Particles, and Stellar Fountain. With a distinctive and rich sound in "Gaia" that bears all the hallmarks of a Cream (PL) track, organic textures and reverb-laden percussion are the perfect foundation for a swathe of filtered analog synths to glide enticingly through the mix with white noise washes in tow. A huge bassline adds depth in abundance and a subtly placed arpeggio brings forward a new emotive edge post-breakdown.

Beginning his production career with the "Cosmos EP" on Markus Schulz's Coldharbour Recordings, Danilo Ercole's rise to prominence has been swift and noteworthy. DJ performances across his native Brazil alongside Aly and Fila, Cosmic Gate, and Paul Oakenfold further cemented a growing reputation, as has music signed to Armada and Black Hole. An angular hypnotic cadence finds Danilo Ercole facing "North" at the outset. Before long a strong beat takes its place alongside the fascinating rhythm and a gloriously programmed arpeggio rises to prominence through the opening sections. Reaching a rousing crescendo at the midpoint, it then combines with the mesmeric sonic palette to explosive effect in the later stages.

A Perspectives Digital regular with a compelling blend of rhythm and melody on original and remix production material, Paul Kardos has grown in stature with every release. Work with Epsilon saw immediate chart success as has high-profile work for Clubsonica, OLD SQL, and Hope Recordings – the latter with Alex Orion on April 2019's "Control / Timeless" EP for the Nick Warren led imprint. "Miraculously" finds Paul Kardos carrying on where he left off with a squelching, popping percussive top line that provides the perfect framework for a rich and smooth array of pads to wend a willowy path across the first half. A new glassy chord makes an appearance midway to add texture and beauty to the chunky background groove and Kardos' skill is to juxtapose disparate elements that coalesce within a joyous whole.

A testament to the growth of Adam Beyer’s scene-leading label, Drumcode annual A-Sides Vol.8 is the brand’s biggest yet.

The 25-track strong compilation features standout cuts Beyer has received over the last 12 months, but been unable to find room for in Drumcode’s regular release schedule, such is the volume and high standard of music that’s submitted.

The highlight-rich compilation includes Jamie Jones & Darius Syrossian’s buzzy Drumcode debut ‘Eyes of the Night’, Nicole Moudaber’s first DC release in 5 years with the mesmerizing ‘This Is Us’, Will Clarke’s bass-drenched re-work of Adam Beyer & Bart Skils ‘Your Mind’ and Joey Beltram’s first Drumcode release in 11 years with the retro-tinged ‘Can You Feel It’. 

The beloved Alan Fitzpatrick returns to the fold with the searing ‘Heiße Rakete’, alongside label mainstays Layton Giordani, who drops the stirring chord-driven ‘Chrome’ and Wehbba with ‘Mantra’, combining techno classicism with future-focused groove.

There’s a troupe of debutants donning the Drumcode jersey for the first time, including BEC, Shelley Johannson, Anthony Castaldo, Avision, Zimmz, Woo York, SAMA (in a terrific collaboration with Secret Cinema) and Ilija Djokovic, who delivers a shimmering highlight with ‘Aura’, a particular favourite of Beyer’s over the last year. Raxon also debuts on the label after a couple of quality additions to the Truesoul back catalogue.

Exciting young guns Weska and Juliet Fox bring heat to the compilation, while Veerus and Timmo follow up strong DC releases with a repeat dose. Elsewhere faithful contributors Ramon Tapia, Jay Lumen, Luca Agnelli, Marco Bailey and Mark Reeve craft powerful dancefloor weapons.

What’s in a name? 

At first glance it seems Bulgarian production duo Balthazar & JackRock have chosen a curious moniker for their latest release. But given the ease with which this record slashes and slices through the sonic clutter that mires the less creative side of tech-house, ‘Blade Dancer’ is nothing if not fitting.

Balthazar & JackRock’s edgy sound is born from the nouveau-riche Bulgarian city of Sofia. Spurred by a debut project for an achingly glam German fashion show (sharp beats for sharp hemlines), the duo released their debut record Rockin’ Dancefloor in 2006. Since then their tech-house tracks have garnered widespread acclaim, picking up support from the likes of Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Paul Van Dyk and Umek. It’s not hard to see why.

The eponymous track is an explosion of aural ideas. That’s not always a good thing. But the skill here is how subtly and artfully Balthazar & JackRock reveal the various elements. The intelligent structure is a playful maze of twists and turns - each revealing a new layer to the soundscape - and the thrilling central melody sounds like Morse code forging a clarion call to the dance floor. The track races to its conclusion with a cluster of clipped, confident beats. A triumph.

Later in the EP, Baptism-released Alex Di Stefano gives ‘Blade Dancer’ the remix treatment, applying a more menacing, spectral sheen to the track - complete with the surgically precise percussive fills that are his hallmark. But first comes ‘Aquaries’, whose woozy bass synth and faltering rhythms form a creative backdrop for synth pans seemingly hell-bent on covering every iota of the aural spectrum. Again, there are ideas aplenty here. But none are as memorable as the thunder-stealing, euphoric synth melodies of this track’s midpoint. Stunning.

The summer dance floor? Balthazar & JackRock’s names are written all over it.

Jerome Isma-ae combines the behind-the-curtain knowledge of a music producer, with the familiarity and deep knowledge of a dance floor you would expect from a DJ. Broad in his influences, and a visionary in his approach, you’ll always catch a hint of progressiveness in his sound. Jerome has been surrounded by music since his early years, with musical education in elementary school, learning the piano and later the guitar. At 12, Jerome was already playing the bass guitar in a heavy metal band, but it wasn’t until 14 that he started making his own beats with a drum machine.
Having dabbled in many dance music subgenres, you will catch glimpses of Techno, Trance, and Progressive House in his productions. A mean and heavy rhythm section is contrasted against haunting harmonies and counter melodies, and complimented by ambient and textural layers that add a new dimension to the final product. This formula is applied with top-notch clarity and a meticulous attention to detail to such an extent that the sound of his drums has become both recognizable and memorable.
