"Floating with Clouds" is a harmonious and soothing atmospheric soundscape, crafted to promote deep relaxation.   This piece emerged from an evolving chord progression and experimentation with a Valhalla DSP effect plugin that evoked the sensation of soaring through clouds.

Created with a Jerry Rockwell 3-string equidistant hourglass mountain dulcimer (featuring a LACE California Acoustic Magnetic pickup) routed through Logic Pro and Valhalla DSP effects plugins, the song leverages the dulcimer's distinct, gentle, and resonant sound, often characterized by sustained drone notes that provide a rich harmonic foundation. 

Though this song's current form leaves you wishing for more, it's a promising glimpse into future of longer explorations of this ethereal style.

Floating With Clouds

"Counting the Stars" is a meditative, atmospheric soundscape designed for tranquility. Inspired by an attempt to count the countless stars in a vast desert sky, this piece uses a long chord progression to evoke an experience beyond words.

Visions of the Loch

"Desert Echoes: Drifting Through Time" is an ambient soundscape - tranquil, atmospheric with echoes blending with a soothing melodic improvisation.  This long and slow moving song provides us with an opportunity to relax, reflect, and breathe.

I created this song as a study of the Mixolydian Mode.  It has an atmospheric drone with melodic improvising emphasizing the flatted 7th note resulting in the unique Mixolydian sound.  I made it with a MIDI keyboard, Logic Pro, and Valhalla DSP.

The soothing qualities of this song make it a good background to relax, focus and/or do creative work.

Desert Echoes: Drifting Through Time

This mellow track features a simple arrangement centered around a harmonica, enhanced with delay and reverb to create a soothing atmosphere.  

The first two tracks, crafted using a MIDI keyboard, provide depth and immersion, forming an airy and dreamlike backdrop with a two-octave C chord.  The third track  introduces a C blues harmonica, improvising away in a mostly slow tempo that may evoke a sense of relaxation and introspection.  

The overall effect feels as if the harmonica is gently drifting from a distance allowing space to connect with thoughts and emotions.

Moonlit Serenade Waltz No.11 (Original Composition)

Continuing my study of the Dorian Mode.  

This soundscape has an ethereal quality of the electric dulcimer playing in E Dorian improvising weaving in and out of a grunge droning Em chord.  This soundscape has multiple tracks that were recorded clean routed through Logic Pro. On the stereo out track I used Valhalla DSP effects for an atmospheric quality and ChromaVerb to give a Concert Hall feel. 

I used a bow on the electric dulcimer on a couple of tracks and this lead to a floating distortion type sound.

Luna's Radiance

Please explore this soundscape "Beyond the Event Horizon."  This composition expresses a journey through the depths of space and time - featuring a slow, evolving atmosphere that builds attention and anticipation, inviting listeners to explore the unknown - what lies beyond, both musically and conceptually.  Using my MIDI keyboard and high C whistle, I improvised over a C chord made of entirely C notes.  I crafted the song with a blend of synthesizer sounds inspired by "Event Horizon" and Chords of Trance."  The MIDI and whistle were routed through Logic Pro and the sounds were enhanced with Valhalla DSP effects. 

The title"Beyond the Event Horizon" refers to the boundary surrounding a black hole.  A black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape from it, not even light.  This mysterious phenomenon challenges our understanding of the universe and time.

A few weeks ago, I sat down at the piano with the intention of simply... writing. Running my own business with all sorts of music projects, there's a lot more that happens than just creating. There's emails, files, networking, spreadsheets, research, social media, repairs, practice, finances, on and on... and don't get me wrong - I genuinely enjoy it all, or at least learning and developing different skills. But sometimes the ROOT of what I do and the goals I'm pursuing get lost, and I forget to sit down... and create.

On that day that I sat down at the piano, I ended up writing and recording four songs. I started and finished the entire project in one long sitting. I went back to the root. It was refreshing, and restorative.

This is 'Traditions & Traitors.'

I hope it can be special to you, as well, as you navigate life and its busy seasons. I hope you can sit down for a few minutes and just.... be.

I'm a one-man music laboratory -- mostly centered around the electric and acoustic mountain dulcimer, which I make myself in my workshop in South East Ohio, and more often these days in Wooster, which is Northeast Ohio.

I'm currently working with the aspects of the mountain dulcimer which tend to calm and soothe -- though I go through strong reactionary cycles now and again, when I have had enough of the meditative stuff. Sometimes this takes the form of wild filter-synched electronica, and sometimes it is more bluesy.

My music contains many influences, with Celtic music being the primary one most of the time. I've always been an improviser, and I have had some formal jazz training (Ohio State WI-89 BA Music), though I'm not a jazz musician by any stretch. 

I love working with extremely simple, circular chord progressions: those progressions that seem to go on for hours and are hard to stop playing. There is a strong minimalist vibe to this.

I also love the DRONE which is one of the most appealing aspects of the mountain dulcimer. These days, I tend more toward arpeggiating the open drone strings of the dulcimer, rather than the more strident strummed drone typical of the more traditional styles of playing.
