During our research for our third issue on DISCOMFORT, we came across Here There Be Dragons, the podcast by urbanist, podcaster, and editor Jess Myers that is inspired by the strategies city residents use to navigate fear and uncertainty in their cities. The show takes lived experiences seriously as credible data that reveals the impact of public policy and cultural attitudes on our feelings of safety and insecurity in urban space. Through interviews and research it takes a new perspective on urban insecurity, revealing how our mental maps evolve over time as we shed old fears, myths, and biases while picking up new ones. Each episode asks city residents to talk about the strategies that they deploy, the risks they take, and the boundaries they draw within their cities.

The first instalment of a brand new audio-essay of Kodwo Eshun’s 1998 book ‘More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures In Sonic Fiction’. Much sought after since it’s initial publication, ‘More Brilliant’ was a concerted attempt to change the relationship between writing and music. 

Throughout the work, which is situated between electronic music history, media theory, science fiction and Afrodiasporic studies, Eshun constructs an alternative (non-linear) timeline of 20th century music, traversing jazz, dub, techno, funk, hip-hop and jungle. 

The text mobilises what Eshun sees as the theoretical tendencies inherent to the output of artists such as Sun Ra, Lee Perry, Ramellzee, Funkadelic, 4hero and The Jungle Brothers, and open the possibilities of sonic fiction: the hitherto unexplored intersections between science fiction and organised sound.

An expert in indigenous rights and international environmental law, Fleur Ramsay will give a pre-recorded input on the current situation of peoples and places of the Pacific, giving context to the installation »Oceanic Refractions.« after which the artists AM Kanngieser, Mere Nailatikau, and KMRU will speak about their installation further with the scholar Anita Jóri, touching among other on how the work was conceptualised and created, on the Pacific context in which it is grounded, as well as on the techniques and ethics of working with testimony and field recordings.

»Oceanic Refractions« was co-produced by CTM Festival and transmediale with funding by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds (German Capital Culture Fonds), Creative Australia and with support from the European Commission.

Virilism, Clandestiny and Alternative Modes of Being Queer & Arab in France

"Barbes Blues: Ce qu'ils n'ont pas pu nous prendre" une série podcast consacrée aux luttes politiques de l'immigration maghrébine dans les années 70. Le tout en musique.

Au commencement, il y a Barbes, le premier quartier historique de l'immigration maghrébine et africaine à Paris. Le coeur battant. Au comment de cette aventure, il y a aussi Mokhtar. Mokhtar, né Mohamed Bachiri, à Sidi Boubkir près de Oujda. Mokhtar sera un des pionniers des luttes politiques des années 70. Il dira de la Goutte d'or qu'elle était "la capitale des immigrés". Il fallait bien commencer quelque part et ce sera avec Mokhtar, dont le souvenir résonne à qui connait le 18ème depuis assez longtemps. Mokhtar est, à mes yeux, le symbole de l'engagement des ouvriers maghrébins dans la lutte. 
Mokhtar fut des tous les combats des années qui furent ceux des nôtres durant les années 70- début 80 : grève des immigrés de 73, occupation et grèves dans les usines, soutien à la cause palestinienne, lutte contre les expulsions, lutte contre les crimes racistes et policiers, lutte pour les radios libres. Fin mélomane, il fut à l'initiative de nombreux collectifs politiques et de nombreux productions culturelles de la radio au troupes de théâtre. 
Il fallait bien commencer quelque part et si c'est Mokhtar c'est aussi parce qu'il me rappelle mon père, dans sa dignité d'ouvrier. Cette série de podcast elle est aussi pour lui, qui un jour me lâchera une rare confidence : "bien sûr que j'ai fait la grève ! Je l'ai fait de 71 à 79 ! On a fait la grève pour nos droits" . Et pour tous les enfants d'ouvriers maghrébins. Nos parents n'ont jamais baissé la tête.  Bien sûr que nos parents ont dû mérite.
