Jess Cornelius is the New Zealand-born songwriter, singer, and instrumentalist behind Teeth & Tongue. Over the course of four critically-acclaimed albums, Teeth & Tongue gradually morphed from a solo project into a more collaborative 'band-like' affair, culminating in the 2016 album Give Up On Your Health, which was released through Dot Dash/Remote Control in Australia and Dot Dash/ Captured Tracks in North America.

The album was nominated for a J Award and the Australian Music Prize, named Album of the Week on 3RRR and Feature Album on Double J, and featured in Rolling Stone, The Fader and Lena Dunham's Lenny magazine.

Now Jess Cornelius is focusing on a new solo project under her own name, with material that is more stripped back, personal and lyrically direct. Her solo performances showcase her voice and songwriting to full effect as she performs new music from her upcoming release, out in late 2017.

Jess Cornelius has performed at Laneway Festival, Meredith Music Festival, Falls Festival, Boogie, SXSW, CMJ, Perth International Arts Festival and Darwin Festival. She has toured with Courtney Barnett and Vance Joy and performed as a musical guest on several episodes of SBS Television's 'Rockwiz' series. She has also supported J Mascis, Sons & Daughters, EMA, Juana Molina, The Dodos, The Mountain Goats, the Drones and Laura Marling, and in 2013 was invited to make an EP in public at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Second album CARE/TAKING is due for release June 14, 2024 on Tender Loving Empire Records. First single "People Move On" is out now. 

Currently based in Los Angeles, New Zealand-born Jess Cornelius spent her musically formative years in Australia where she released four critically acclaimed albums under the moniker Teeth & Tongue.

In 2016 Cornelius began working under her own name, and moved to Los Angeles after releasing the ‘Nothing is Lost’ EP. Her follow-up album, “Distance”  was released on Loantaka and Part Time Records in 2020.

Jess Cornelius writes arresting songs that capture the disorientation and endless possibilities of being in flux.  Where Cornelius’ 2020 debut Distance found her untethered moving across continents, CARE/TAKING has the songwriter firmly established in her California home but no less at a crossroads. Over 10 intricate and immediate songs, she grapples with squaring global crises  with the transformations and responsibilities in her life. It’s searching indie rock that’s as biting as it is comforting.
