we were in a mexican restaurant in brooklyn and i asked red their favorite bird memory. the first 30 seconds we are trying to remember the name of the bird, and then comes the story and it is very tender and good, just like red. emil eastman and melissa lozada-oliva and a clementine were also there. red maienza is poet from new hampshire whose work you can find online.

in the summer of 2017 in a bay ridge basement sleepover either before or after midnight pie, melissa-lozada-oliva shares not just one but three whole favorite bird memories. hannah rego is also there and possibly a ghost. melissa is a mathmagician and the author of PELUDA and is one half of the podcast SAY MORE.

We share reflections on the Beirut blasts from afar, and the complicated emotions of shared suffering at a distance from the tragedy. We discuss the symbolic shock of the mushroom-cloud effect and expand on whether this is Lebanon's 'Chernobyl Moment'. We also talk about civil war legacy that persists until today, and whether Lebanon is cursed to failed state status despite the persistent push by protestors for the better.

This is Joey's third appearance on The Beirut Banyan. We also reflect on friendship born over the moment despite never having met in person, and how long-form conversations can bring strangers together searching for shared understanding over the difficult moment we're going through.

Joey Ayoub is a PhD researcher and fellow podcaster, and currently hosts 'The Fire These Times' podcast.
