A trip back to London and a trip to the garage to clean out and sell some of the bulky vinyls that were taking up far too much room lead me back to where my obsession with clubbing, partying and music began. For me the late 90's and early 00's were an incredible time of discovery, exploration and experimentation. Fortunate enough to be surrounded by others who were doing pretty much the same thing one way or another. The London underground scene was booming on both the club and squat level, the parties kept coming and the masters both producing and performing the sounds that kept the dancefloors in a frenzy were  numerous and inspiring. It was this inspiration what eventually lead me to have to sort through 800 vinyls to make room in the garage having been using MP3 now for about 3 years and living overseas there was no need for a lot of it. I parted ways with many, kept a few gems but what I did do was make a note of a lot of the names to hunt down their MP3 counterparts. I've tried to cover a wide selection of tracks and styles from those days, influenced heavily from my time at Escape From Samsara, Pendragon, Trance Central and many others. 

The biggest difference for me with this mix is that I have made this one mostly for myself as a way to archive and access easily tunes I have now let go of in physical form and i'm pretty sure I won't be making another mix in this style again. Of course I hope that others enjoy it however, it is a long mix so I recommend listening to it in stages at home, during a commute or journey or perhaps an after party at home with likeminded friends.

Having grown up in Germany’s techno and acid-house heyday, Steve Bug’s love for a perfect groove is as apparent now as it was back then.

His DJ skills and a keen, innovative ear led him not down the typical path of the early nineties trance and harder dance scene, but instead towards a fresher, hybrid sound–merging stripped deep house, tweaked out acid and more minimal forms of techno and electronic music. With annual label compilations, a variety of artist albums, and new concepts like the Forward to the Past series, Steve Bug continues to steadily develop his Poker Flat imprint, as well as his own internationally touring DJ career. In recent years, he has taken the label further afield, with the Big Bluff event series stopping off in major cities worldwide and in hosting a label party with Boiler Room Berlin.

On 29 October, Steve Bug returns to Los Angeles where he will be manning the decks at Minimal Effort's Halloween party alongside the likes of Pete Tong, Tiga, Audion, Mark Farina, Tensnake, and many more. About three years ago I made a mix from the old records I had at home from the 90s to early 00s. I was happy to essentially archive the best of my collection and a lot of others seemed to like it as well. It got me thinking though about the music at the time that I loved but never actually owned as some tracks were pretty hard to get on vinyl back then and it turns out the digital age has made this a lot easier. 52 tracks in total turned into a running time of about 5 hours so I've split it into two halves. If you wish to join the two then go ahead, I made sure they will fit together again quite easily. Either way I hope you enjoy this collection of music from a time that still means a lot to me today and if I've managed to capture a pinch of the love and the energy from that time here then my work is done. Oi Tim Samsara Where's Me Banana? Pt2

The final part of this archive series, designed to be joined onto the end of part 2 sees things progressing in tempo, power and sheer arms in the air goodness. From this 3 part set I think I have covered everything as best I can and doubt I will be making another, it's really time consuming finding some of these old tracks and as I've said before I'm happy to have these tracks together in one place  available to all of us who were there and perhaps some who weren't. My gift to you all in thanks for all the great moments that took place in all the great nights we ever danced together. I hope others find some inspiration to do the same as I would love to hear the tunes others remember that I had not.

Old Studio Liveset, thought I'd put it up for all you old skool diehards.

Just my CD, it was released as a double pack with Myself and DDR on CD2, in about 1997 I think. You can download this one, I can't put DDR's up, You'll have to ask him if you want it, sorry abut that, but I have to save space.

The set was made in my studio in Brick Lane at the old Truman Brewery, which I always regretted moving out of. I had a lovely big room with huge windows looking over the side alley of the brewery and I ended up living there for a bit after we moved out of our house in Stamford Hill. Great area, I would move there again in a heartbeat. Even if just for the curry.

I did this set with a 66Mhz PC running Cubase Compact under Windows 95. I had one column of midi tracks in a 4 bar loop, my Akai S3200 sampler was loaded with vocals and drums and loops, these were all being played by the Cubase loops, The rest was hardware kit running in pattern mode synchronized to the PC by Midi clock, my Nord Modular was running drum synths and other patterns, The 909 doing the main drums, Two 303's with a bunch of different patterns, one doing basslines the other doing lead acid lines, The Sequential Pro One doing a bunch of random shit that I was just bashing into it and fading into the mix with delay and reverb FX on, and that was it. 

I ran through it once recording to DAT. The first 45 mins are completely live, then something went out of synch so I stopped and reset synch and finished it off. I had to make a little edit to join it back together, I was using Soundscape at the time for HD Audio so that took care of the edit and here's the final result.

These days this kind of thing is a piece of piss to set up on Ableton Live and you can do so much more with midi controllers now too, but 15 years ago it was a different story.
