Sophia James — her birth name is Sophia Wackerman — is a singer, songwriter pianist and global jazz studies major, and she describes her music as a mix of rock, soul, pop and fusion.
By the time Sophia Wackerman ended her American Idol 2020 run in the Top 11 after a jazzy performance of the Beach Boys “In My Room” she had changed her name to Sophia James. Judge Katy Perry suggested the singer switch to Star, her late mother’s stage name. But Sophia settled on paying tribute to her brother James, whose special needs never held him back.

Now, Sophia has released a new song,  “Somebody New.” The tune harkens back to standards from the 50s and 60s. There is even the sound of a crackling needle at the end of the record. Break out your martini glasses, people!

Forget About You

Sunday Duverreaux, former member of Oblige, steps into his own voice with a collection of warm, blues-jazz gospel standards that feel like conversations more than performances. Drawing from New Orleans heritage, street-preacher grit, late-night guitar rooms, and quiet moments of spiritual clarity, Sunday sings songs that are simple, honest, and deeply human.

The album moves from personal conviction (“I Still Believe in You”), to soulful comfort (“I Don’t Mind the Rain Tonight”), to generational heritage (“Bloodline”), to bold street-calling fire (“Crawdad Daddy”), and into the inner life of faith (“The Kingdom’s in You,” “Believe It First,” “Vain Imagination”).

At the heart of the record is Sunday’s signature tenderness — his ability to make big truths feel close, warm, and familiar.
The closing track, “Supper at the Open Door,” brings it home with a picture of Jesus entering the heart and sharing a simple meal — the perfect summary of Sunday’s sound: humble invitation, quiet peace, and deep, steady hope.
