World Premiere and Commissioned by American Composers Orchestra at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 9, 2015, Conductor George Manahan

Sanctum, for orchestra and recorded sound, explores the sound of improvisation in Holiness-preaching traditions. I draw inspiration from recorded sermons, The Praying Slave Lady by Pastor Shirley Caesar, The Eagle Stirs His Nest by Reverend C. L. Franklin, and Reverend Charles Albert Tindley’s hymn, Stand By Me. Included are the voices of Marlene Pinnock and of activists in Ferguson, Missouri from 2014. Sanctum is my artistic response to recent events of police brutality. By employing techniques of layered repetition, rhythmic intensity, sounds of moaning and whooping, and voices of the past and present, Sanctum invokes solace found in the midst of persecution and tribulation.


Sanctum was commissioned and premiered by American Composers Orchestra with the generous support of The Jerome Foundation and The Peter Heller Fund.

I recorded this a good few years ago with my boy Dan Carey in the same group of sessions that I did 'Laughing' and 'Raining'.

Higher/Lower is just a conversation about the ups, downs and hair pulling of a bad relationship. Hence the words;
"Throughout the time, of my belows,
You get me high, to take me low,
Now at the time, I did not know,
That your everything will be so small."

I felt that way once. Suckered into a bad situation by the insistence that I give my all. Then I remembered I had Superman's eyebrows, and I flew out that situation! ;-)

Okay, here's a fun one. This is a jam I first recorded in London (then it was called Mugabe. Don't know why). When I landed in South Africa to record for Jay's album, I saw that all the super dope musicians that were there didn't know each other because we were from all different parts of the world, so I pulled us all in a room together and called in every last person that was on the resort and made us all play together as a band. This is the outcome.

That's why I call it "WAHALA", it's the Nigerian word for 'Trouble'. And that is exactly what it was when Me, O'Maas from Sa Ra, Amp Fiddler, LaTonya Givens, Izzi Dunn, Brandon Williams, Mose, Joseph I, Mouchette, 20 Grand, DJTJ The King and every single human on that resort come together and vibe out.

After this day we were literally family and had some of the best times of our lives.

"The Ballad Of John Taylor"
This instrumental is one of the main themes from my western THEY DIE BY DAWN.

John Taylor is played by the incomparable Jesse Williams who teams with Edmonia Lewis (played by the amazing Rosario Dawson) to wreak havoc in the town of Langston. I won't give to much away.

I want to make listening to movie scores fun again. People don't celebrate the music of movies half as much as they should do. A movie with no music is really hard to watch.

People like Ennio Morricone and Lalo Schifrin have more influence on me as an artist than anyone else. So I want to be able to put out a piece of music so when you watch something I've directed, you recognise the score, even if it's an orchestral piece.

This song can also be found as a b-side for World Inside Your Rainbow, but a lot of you still haven't heard it.

I'm working on a piece now called "The Ballad Of Elpadaro Flowers" for our brother Jay-E.
