"Whispers of the Earth" is a sonic fusion created to evoke the deep connection between humanity and nature, as well as the subtle link between different cultures around the world. I wanted to create a piece that not only delights the ear but also transports you to a universe where the tranquillity of nature and the echo of traditions intertwine in an organic and fluid way.

Concept and Intention

I began this composition with the desire to reflect the grandeur and delicacy of nature. The first chords are supported by a violin, followed by an electronic organ, which, through an autotune effect, transitions into the deep sounds of the French horn and back. Here, the glockenspiel(a metalophone with bright, bell-like tones) plays an essential role, adding a note of clarity and purity, like a breeze that brings peace and hope. This initial part symbolizes the beginning of an inner journey, a moment of reflection and peace.

Cultural Exploration

As the melody evolves, I integrated various sonic elements to symbolize the meeting of cultures. The European dulcimer, played electronically in the first part, suggests a connection to Western traditions, while the synthesizer adds a layer of modernity and innovation. As we approach the end of the piece, I wanted to capture the cultural richness of the East by introducing traditional Chinese instruments such as the Yangqin (Chinese Dulcimer), Erhu (Chinese violin, aka Chinese 2-string fiddle), and DiZi (Chinese bamboo flute in D major). These not only add another layer of texture but also transform the melody into an ode to global unity.

Sonic and Thematic Fusion

Another aspect I wanted to highlight is the continuity between East and West, past and present. This is why instruments like the violin and glockenspiel in the first part gradually make way for the Erhu and Yangqin, marking a natural transition between styles and cultures. The woodwind instruments, used throughout the piece, contribute to creating an organic atmosphere that blends natural elements with human expressions.

Conclusion

With "Whispers of the Earth," I aimed to create a piece that resonates not only with the listeners' ears but also with their souls. It is a composition that speaks of inner peace, the beauty of cultural diversity, and the way in which the sounds of nature and our traditions can coexist in perfect harmony. I hope each listener finds in this melody their own reflections and connections with the world around them.

This track Clouds on Fire is the instrumental version of a song I released a few months ago with the title Fire Balloons. I nearly always compose my songs with instruments like the oboe acting as place holders for the vocals. It struck me that this particular composition would go well as an instrumental in its own right, so here it is for your enjoyment!

25 years ago, I first laid my hands on some Technic 1200s and became addicted! To celebrate this huge milestone, I decided to produce some sets that made me fall in love with the scene in the first place. After going through over 7,500 tracks from the 90’s and early 2000’s, I came up with the White Doves and Green Triangles Mixes. I wanted it to represent what was happening in Los Angeles trance scene, my hometown. Full of hidden gems, forgotten treasures, lessor known mixes, and a couple of my favorite tracks from that era, I wanted to create something authentic in every way. 

The White Doves mix is more of a pre-midnight mix where the Green Triangles mix is more full on rave, but structured to listen to one after the other. 

If you were an raver in Los Angeles during the 90s, I hope it’s nostalgic and brings back “that feeling.”

We have condensed the oldest and longest (at 13,000+ words) poetic drama ever composed, entitled the Epic of Gilgamesh. 

The Epic is about the first and original hero ...of those “with a thousand faces”, the term coined by the mythologist Joseph Campbell, to indicate that there were more mythological heroes who underwent similarly challenging rite-of-passage quests after Gilgamesh. There were heroes like Hercules, Jason, Theseus and Odysseus, Buddha, Pinocchio in fact, and even Bob Dylan sung of his own hero's journey in his song Isis on the album Desire. King Arthur and Merlin also undertook a heroic quest in the Celtic myths, a sea voyage around the pole stars. 

But Gilgamesh is the prototype, and his epic journey requires him to “tread the rim of the wheel”. In my book, Stories in the Stars, I re-interpret the translations of the cuneiform on the Babylonian tablets to show that this "wheel's rim" symbolises the ring of the zodiac constellations in the stars, and so that’s also reflected in our track.

A Christmas Wish List For Santa

This started as a small mini-theme for my Instagram and I expanded it for a minor release.  I was working on creating a synth-wave template for Ableton and, because my brain doesn't allow me to not make something when exploring new sounds, this is what came about.  I still haven't made the template. 

I've been spending a bunch of time doing not music-related items (research, technique tutorials, etc) and it's been more difficult to focus on releases now that I am trying for social media content.  

Gotta try to find that balance.
