Jazz pianist Maurice Rocco was a star of American nightclubs and Hollywood films in the 1930s-40s, playing in an ecstatic, stand-up style that left a deep impression on rock and roll. But in the 1950s Rocco fell out of fashion. Hoping to reverse his fortune, he went abroad in 1959. Rocco landed in Bangkok, Thailand, where he lived and played in relative privilege, away from American racism and homophobia, in an elite tier of Vietnam War-era nightlife. His murder in 1976 by two young sex workers was a tragic end to a fascinating American life. Produced by Benjamin Tausig.

This Fox Movietone short soundtrack disk is a real mystery. The title on the label and wax says BROADWAY AFTER DARK, yet there was no such short by that title released. It sounds like a Fox "actuality" where the sound cameras traveled to different locations and let the event speak for itself. I can identify Texas Guinan, Rudy Vallee, a stop at the Cotton Club, and at the end impressario Nils T. Granlund introducing some beauties and wisecracking to J.C. Flippen. Sure wish we knew more about this one and that the picture existed. Tunes are from 1928-29. You are hearing this for the first time in at least 84 years! Any ideas?
