The launch of the Webb telescope is a monumental leap for space exploration, and will give scientists a better view of our neighbors and a clearer window of the past. Given how shit 2022 has been, the images coming from the gold dish are a welcome distraction. As is this music.
When I recorded this set, I was struck by how spacey the sounds are in this 2022 NuTrance revival goodie bag that is coming from small labels across the globe. Is it trance? Breaks? Electro? Something else? I honestly have no clue, but this music embodies the best parts of early trance and rave music. Enjoy this 3 hour impromptu journey through the stars, starting a mellow 110 working our way up to 145.

EPM Podcast 158 is an old school techno and house mix from Jason Carter. As a long-time DJ and club runner who broke through in the early 90s Birmingham techno and house scene, Jason continues to fly the flag for the cutting-edge dancefloor music that originally inspired him to take to the decks. On this exclusive vinyl only mix we see Jason bring in classics and lesser-known gems from the likes of Todd Terry, Laurent X, Reese & Santonio, Armando, Fierce Ruling Diva, Rhythm is Rhythm, TNT and more.

Jason started DJing in early 1987 at the young age of 14, at that time listening to electro, hip-hop and Chicago house. During the acid house explosion he started to frequent legendary clubs such as the Hacienda and the notorious Blackburn raves etc. During his school age years he DJ’d at local small events and his first break came in the form of pirate radio when he was 16. He quickly progressed on, to DJing at local raves and started to promote and host his own events from 1992. 

In the early 90s he promoted his first major events including Sound Factory UK, due to his love of the harder edged music of Detroit and Chicago he went on to form Corrosive, a successful techno and Chicago jack night which ran for many years, hosting many big name DJs in his hometown and Birmingham. His career began to take off at this time seeing him playing out at various clubs and festivals across Europe, up and down the UK. Taking him as far as New York, Boston and Philadelphia to name but a few, he was also heavily involved with Morpheus Productions (later to become EPM) handling bookings for some of the biggest DJs of the time. 

He went on to produce with production partner Oliver way under Morpheus Productions releasing various EPs and tracks and also released tracks on Dark House music and Bell Boy and featured a track on the Detroit Grand Pubahs album Nuttin Butt The Funk.

Over the years he's performed alongside some of the biggest names in house and techno at some of the most respected venues the scene had to offer. His musical influences are varied but always on the quality side with an underground edge. ranging from Motown, funk, electro, rap, freestyle, acid house, early vocal garage, "proper" house music, techno, and jit/Chicago booty house. His form of attack has always been pure vinyl and he continues to DJ only vinyl sets.

This mix was created for the /r/classicstrance comp, the prompt encouraging one or more rare tracks (hence the 'under the table') pre-2008 trance with no other restrictions. Freedom! I've been itching to make a classics prog set for a while anyway. This set leans in to that classic late 90s prog sound, although it reaches in to the EE era as well. Journey prog was always my favorite and likely always likely will be. Shame the genre is nearly non-existent in 2023. I wanted this mix to be dreamy and a bit more emotive than some of the mixes I've made lately. This mix really takes its time as well, so sit back for the ride. There are some footnotes to explain the rarity or composition path for some of the tracks below. 128-137bpm. Enjoy.

I would not usually dissect such pristine tracks, but I noticed a few years ago that Lost Tribe's 'Under the Red Sea' and Darey's infamous 'Wizards of the Sonic' Remix were made from the same ingredients. Had to cook up a new recipe with them. This is a longer version with a remaster.
***** 2023 update to an outro remix. This update has more elements of the red sea and extended.
****** I thought I could use the Solarstone Pure Intro as it is 2011 remix of a 1999 track, but alas, I missed a rules clarification for modern booties only. This hybrid was made to get around the rules.

Sydney Rave History is a collective Facebook group for Sydney ravers, clubbers & DJs to connect and reminisce through streams and events. They hold a Livestream marathon spanning 3 to 4 days every long weekend, which is usually reserved for Sydney DJs to share their musical memories. As a UK ex-pat DJ, it was a huge honor to have played alongside some true Sydney DJs legends during this Easter Long weekend streaming marathon. This is my interpretation of a rave history set, based upon my experience growing up in the early 90s, UK.
