Afrosouldescarga n°7-I love music (James Stewart for Radio Grenouille 88.8fm)

Soundway present a very limited vinyl-only re-issue of an obscure LP by the enigmatic Nigerian artist Easy Kabaka Brown. The LP was originally released and recorded by Philips / Phonogram in 1976 and only sold in very small numbers. Musically it's a intriguing mix of mostly Nigerian highlife with a bit of afro-jazz sung in the language of Kalabari from the Delta region of Southern Nigeria.  From the bouncy good times of Belema to the deeper extended afro workout of Agboho this unique album stands out from thousands of others of it's time with a sound of its own that draws on many influences, with Congolese and latin touches to jazz trumpet and psychedelic organ lines.

Easy Kabaka Brown (Opotopo was his nickname) was a versatile and eccentric musician who recorded two full length albums (this is the first) and only a couple of 45s. We at Soundway have deemed this record way too sweet  to be forgotten, only to gradually ebb away and disappear with time. It's a record that will give you a golden, warm feeling. Your toes will tap, your face should smile and it certainly deserves to be heard by far more than only the few hundred people who bought it nearly 40 years ago. Strictly limited to 1000 x 180g vinyl copies and released in a rigid paste-on sleeve, these will not last long so don't sleep!

A short expedition into the much overlooked tipica cumbia sound of Panamá

The heartache, melancholy and joy in the Panamá Tipica sound is hard to match and like no other to experience. It comes from a rich background of regional musical traditions, carnival rivalry and hotbeds like the legendary 'Festival en Guarare'. As I understand it, Panamanian cumbia was first played on violin until the arrival of accordions on the Isthmus, most early acordeoneros were violinists first and foremost. This mixtape comprises of some of the best 45s from the Herrera and Los Santos provinces, from the mid 50s through to late 60s. Over the last few years I've had the good fortune to meet several of these wonderful artists. Featured here: Dorindo, Papi Brandao, Oswaldo,Fito Espina, Ulpiano, Ceferino and more... This sound has long informed the systems of Barranquilla and parallels cumbia, samba & compas in sonic ancestral synchronicity.

Il a participé à de nombreux festivals (Wordwide Festival de Gilles Petterson, Jazz à Vienne, Tribu Festival, Invits de Villeurbanne, Nuits Sonores…). Il est Dj Résident et programmateur des Soirée Black Atlantic Club au Sucre (Lyon), à l'Opéra Undergound, Ninkasi Kao, Café à Lyon, La Bobine à Grenoble etc... : Pat Thomas, Jupiter Okwess, Vaudou Game, Batida, Family Atlantica, Ebo Taylor, Orlando Julius & Heliocentrics, Laurent Garnier, Auntie Flo, MCDE, Raoul K…. 
Il est le fondateur du blog Afrosouldescarga et anime une mixtape consacrée à ces musiques de "l'Atlantique Noir" sur, Nova Lyon, LYL Radio & Radioshic. A collaboré entre autres avec Radio Grenouille (Marseille), Radio Nova (Paris). Il donne aussi des conférences sur le sujet : Tribu Festival 2012, Musée Africain de Lyon 2013, Jazz à Vienne 2012 avec Manu Dibango, Cave à Jazz (Smac 07) 2014, Salif Keïta (Lyon 2016)…
Producteur, percussionniste son premier EP, "Cotonou", est sorti en 2018 sur le label suisse Alma Negra. Son dernier EP "Atlantic River Drive" est sorti sur le label Mawimbi Records en octobre 2020 (FIP, NOVA, RFI, RTS...). Il a aussi sorti le single "Nolias" en 2019 sur le label anglais "On the Corner Records".

James Stewart is DJ host and programmator for the Black Atlantic club monthly party at Le Sucre in Lyon. He’s active member and programmer for the collective Palmwine Records, he is the founder of the blog Afrosouldescarga and hosts radio shows devoted to Black Atlantic music on Radio Nova Lyon LYL Radio & Radioshic. He also gives lectures on the subject. Producer, percussionist, his first EP, Cotonou, was issue on Alma Negra label the 8th of june 2018. His new EP "Atlantic river drive" has been issue last october on Mawimbi Records. He also has a single, "Nolias" on the label "On the Corner Records" UK.
