Jim began writing pieces for guitar in the 1970's. The early 80's introduction of affordable synthesizers gave a new form of expression. He started with one monophonic Roland analog synth and simple reel-to-reel tape recorders. Tracks were bounced from deck to deck to create as many as 14 tracks of sound-on-sound. Early works are still being digitized and some may appear here.
Jim collaborated with friends, sometimes informally, sometimes for pay and sometimes in a band. An informal experimental sound included "The Incurables", a trio of apartment sonic experimentalism that included home-made drums, synths, guitars and toy instruments. "The Yeast Men" was a local Richmond band that performed in the early to mid 1980's. Jim wrote some pieces and performed in "The Yeast Men" while continuing solo compositions. Jim also created music for commercial projects that included audio-video corporate presentations.
Jim continues to write and perform for mostly personal reasons today. New tools include Audacity, Ableton Live and Reason software to aid in musical exploration.
