Crackhouse is a new & rather questionable mixing style devised by Jim Z sometime late 2016 in Brisbane, Australia. Inspired chiefly by DJ ASSAULT's classic series "Straight Up Detroit Sh!t", there are key differences here which set Crackhouse apart from a technical perspective.

The basic idea is this -- records containing house music & related genres (mostly cut at 33RPM and around 115-132BPM) are mixed together @ 45RPM, creating a face-paced, oldskool rave/techno vibe with smoother & groovier sounds, when the right tracks are used. The 'ideal' tempo for Crackhouse is around 150-160BPM.

Secondly, the use of Super OEM turntables (ie. high-torque) is infinitely preferable over traditional Technics models, moreso if higher pitch +/- ranges are available. This is of course to accommodate the increased pitch ranges between tracks in your box when playing them @ 45RPM.  "Enter The Crackhouse" was recorded on 2x Audio Technica LP1240s & an A&H Xone:23C mixer.
 
Although house should be a dominant flavour, sets don't have to be house exclusive.. any club dance or 'deep dance' records could be used, with a focus away from ghetto/techno/heavy electro. The point is to retain that same speed & intensity in the mix, whilst employing groups of lighter/more sonically 'smooth' 4/4 & broken-beat tracks. My intention was to take club mixing into the future by drawing from the essence of early ghetto & rave styles, rather than rehashing their cliches.

I've also found that often, house tracks which sound quite boring or sparse at their original speed can be most effective when used in a Crackhouse context... ;)

Finally, speaking of context ~ a note on linguistics ~ here in Oz, crack cocaine is not so common, but the use of methamphetamine is rampant... we call this substance 'ice', or more colloquially, 'crack'. It is one of the biggest problems our country faces today, and the style of Crackhouse was not intended to glorify this scourge (as can be heard from some Sopranos samples throughout the mix). It was, however, originally created so that I could play faster sets to younger crowds – who are generally taking MDA/MDMA - without playing music that was too hard or intense for them.

The name made sense given both the debt this style owes to Ghettotech music, and the feeling it (hopefully) evokes to the listener. I wish you great happiness and prosperity as you "Enter The Crackhouse".......
