In the UK Midlands of late 1988, shortly after the second Summer of Love, a 15 year old schoolboy, already immersed in Acid House and Detroit Techno, reads in one of the pretentious London-centric mags he devours each month about a new sound which could be the next big genre.  It's called New Beat, and it comes, of all places, from Belgium. This makes him pay attention -  he spent every summer holiday of his youth in one of the country's resorts, and had vague memories of stark, pounding electronic music emanating from club doorways late at night.

He makes a trip from his suburban home into the city centre determined to find some examples of this new music. After a lot of searching he comes up trumps: a compilation album called 'New Beat - Take 1'. He buys it on the spot and takes it home to listen to. As with most albums he's ever bought, he feels slightly cheated, after a couple of good tracks there's a fair bit of filler, and certainly no overriding 'sound' other than a somewhat slow and Euro Pop centric approach to House. Nothing like the aural fingerprint of Acid or Techno. But...

Some of the tracks pique his interest. They have a dark, early 80s synth heavy sound which reminds him of both the Synth Pop of his youth, and the mysterious music filtering out of those Belgian clubs as a child...

He has to wait till the very end of the album for the best of these - a track called 'Flesh' by A Split Second. The fascinating sleeve notes of the L.P. tell the story of how an already banging tune in the established Belgian style of 'Electronic Body Music' was played at the wrong speed (33 1/3 and +8 on the Technics deck) by an Antwerp DJ called Fat Ronny. The club went wild, and a new genre was born - Belgian producers trying to replicate the slower groove and dark timbres of this fateful bit of serendipity. The UK schoolboy gets more than a little obsessed by the tune...

The lad in question went on to form a career in dance music production, and after 25 years has decided to revisit this important and very personal piece of nostalgia, fashioning a complete, respectful and sample free rework of the track based on it's 'go slow' speed.

The KLF is known as one of Britain's most notorious pop acts.  They were on the forefront of the acid house movement in the late 1980s, scored a #1 hit, retired shortly after in 1992 by deleting their entire back catalog, and then burned 1,000,000 British Pounds in 1994. 

Gosteffects’s resurrection of The KLF’s "What Time is Love" was influenced by the sound design in 90s Industrial and Techno music.  His Pretty Hate Machine inspired remix has given the rave classic a fresh new soundscape and structure suitable for the modern dance floor.

'My grandma went blind before I was born. She knows who I am and she knows my voice better than I do. I believe the “Jing" in her mind is a deeper version of myself, and one I aim to keep on discovering.’
Discovering a passion for music from an early age whilst working in a music store in Taipei, Taiwanese creative, electronic live performer, DJ and composer Jing writes short stories and produces musical soundscapes to convey them - like a short film without the visuals, the opposite of a silent movie. Completing her latest project a year after its inception, ’Adularescence’ will be released on 12" via Steve Bicknell’s 6dimensions on February 8th. The label, recently nominated in the 'Breakthrough Label' category of DJ Mag's 'Best of British’ poll, uses philosophy of the human mind as a conceptual starting point for its output. 
Jing aims to take the listener on an intense journey, challenging her audience by providing a unique environment without seeing it with their own eyes. If visuals are no longer present, can we hear a deeper story? While the content of ‘Adularescence’ is colourful, it represents a black and white cult-classic filled with emotions. It is accompanied by a short story on its sleeve, a narrative to its 12 experimental parts, taking the listener on an unforgettable trip. Dark, psychedelic sounds permeate the eardrum, a beautiful and disturbing concoction of images relating to the text. Jing herself pictures a suffocating man who cannot scream.
In order to pursue her curiosity of music Jing realised she would need to relocate to Europe. Following her life's natural path she cemented foundations through encounters along the way, and shortly after arriving in Berlin, formed an electronic dream pop band ‘Polygothica' with close friend Dilijana. She is also a member of the performance collective UNDO alongside Bifi Boy, Birds and Tapes, DJ Nytanata, Otto Oscar Hernandez Ruiz and visual artist Christian Starz, creating environments in various cities to host UNDO's experiments.
Jing has performed at numerous underground events, festivals and clubs, including Fusion, Nacht Digital, Kranichie, West Germany, De School, Korner and Organik Festival to name a few. Drawing on an array of influences, cult films and fiction, Jing is an explorer, out to share her creations……

'Kylie said Trance' is the B-side of 'When Kylie said to Jason'. It was released in 1989 and is regarded by many as the birth of Trance music. Also the best thing that Kylie Minogue or Jason Donovan ever had their name on.
In 1990 The KLF released the album 'Chill Out'. I'll presume no more needs to be said about that.
In 1991 they were the biggest selling band in the world, with 4 top ten singles and 'The White Room' album.
On 12 February 1992, they opened the BRIT Awards in London with a thrash version of '3a.m. Eternal', accompanied by punk band Extreme Noise Terror. The performance ended with Bill Drummond firing blanks from a machine gun over the heads of the crowd, and their promoter Scott Piering announcing over the PA that "The KLF have now left the music business".
They were subsequently kicked out of the ceremony and unable to receive their award for  "Best British Group'.  Later that night, on the red carpet of the official after-party, they dumped a dead sheep and 8 gallons of blood, along with the message "I DIED FOR EWE - BON APETIT" tied around its body.
After the show they had a motorcycle courier collect the BRIT Award statuette. It was finally found years later, buried in a field near Stonehenge and then returned to the duo. It hasn't been seen again.
Following months of media speculations, on the 14th May 1992, The KLF deleted their entire back music catalogue and destroyed all their merchandise. An action made possible because, in the true DIY spirit of punk, they owned their own record label. This action was to prove that their break-up was serious and not a stunt to sell more records.

Nachtdigital Mint marks the last edition of Nachtdigital Festival: After more than two decades it is time for a change. Over the course of the past eight years, Nachtdigital has given birth to a dozen releases in various formats. "Nachtdigital Mint" is the final statement - a return to the roots, in its most accomplished form.

Starting with a single 10inch release in 2011, the Nachtdigital label has evolved both musically and visually. 2017 saw the release of the first double LP with gatefold cover - a format that since has become the preferred mode of operation. For the last two years, Nachtdigital has focussed primarily on commissioned works, with thematically curated releases. The "Nachtdigital Mint" compilation marks the return to the original idea of the label: To compile tracks from artists of this year’s festival program, without much fuzz about conceptual works. The result is refreshingly energetic and gives a glimpse into the heterogeneous sound of the festival itself: Combining young talents with accomplished producers, raw sounds with dreamy delicacies. Side D was compiled in collaboration with Prague’s club institution Ankali - a fitting closing statement, as collaborations are what Nachtdigital has always been about.
