@rosa-au is an enigmatic project based in Naarm/Melbourne. Encapsulating a mix series, illegal raves and more recently a record label (the first release of which came from the equally elusive Sa Pa), the project’s unwavering thread is its focus on sound and curation.

With Patterns of Perception 90, Rosa offers a visceral, expansive journey that touches nearly every corner of its sophisticated soundscape. Hallucinatory atmospheres flare into vibrant, propulsive energy. Unsettling electronics meet submerged, mutant grooves, kindling a luminous expedition that feels both profound and psychotropic.

This month’s Bright Patterns is a special tribute to Norm Chambers, who sadly passed away in November from a rare form of sinus cancer. Norm released a prolific amount of material under his own name and several other monikers over the years, such as Panabrite, Jürgen Müller, and Spiral Index. Following a two-hour tribute for 2021’s No Way Back comprised entirely of Norm’s music, this edition of Panabrite Patterns features four talented artists who connected deeply with the unique world imagined within his productions. William Selman presents a mix of selections they shared as favorites. Joshua Davison created six original tracks with Norm’s sonic pathways in mind. Matthew Patterson Curry crafted an extensive soundscape inspired by the simplicity and freedom of Norm’s rich output. The final portion is a hybrid mix from Jonas Reinhardt, who released the first edition of “The Encyclopedia of Civilizations” with Norm under his Jürgen Müller alias.

Following the opportunity to contribute a track entitled "Surging Waves VA" to a compilation album from the Berlin-based ambient/new age label VAKNAR / VAAGNER, yolabmi has continued to release music on labels outside of his native Japan.

Last year in 2022, he released "For Wind Poetry", a trilogy following "Life in a Shell" announced in 2019 from the same label, and continues to create sounds that expand his own experimentation. 

With a minimal, ambient, and experimental base, he makes audio collages comprised of sounds which he has recorded personally. Concurrent with his musical activity, he also creates his own artwork, assembling visual collages by hand.

For this episode of Transience we have invited expert improvisor and cosmic angel, Dan Nicholls to create a 90 minute journey to alleviate our physical realm anxieties. I've been following Dan's work for many years and am very happy that the stars finally align to host them live from the Cashmere Studio to begin the weekend's programmation. I love the way Dan is able to create such detailed sound worlds that invite us to meander about in them, sway like spores or lay gently nestled in their foliage. For this occassion we sat on the floor of the Cashmere Radio studio in the same space as the audience with a few cushions and Dan’s live setup. Having spent the previous night dancing we were super relaxed and ready to continue the adventure. We arrived at the studio with no real plan, wondering about how to start and what kind of sounds the set might begin with. Despite the not knowing, we both had total trust and a willingness to surrender to the moment.

Dan sees improvising as a way to bypass certain tendencies we might have to control and rationalise; to get in the way of the story or the energetic flow. A personal process of deconstructing, unravelling and healing – but more importantly an experience of playful sharing, creating sonic spaces that the listener can inhabit. The set features an improvised text by Dan’s child Liv, which touches on our origins in the cosmos and the vital need to listen to our bodies. This monologue is spoken in a dream-like imaginary voice, refracting some of the ideas that Liv has been exposed to and has intuitively felt. A different kind of truthful speech. So in a sense, it does with a child’s freedom and clarity of thought what this collection of improvised sounds and imaginary landscapes also hopes to do.

We invite you all to listen to your bodies and your hearts, and lay down to embark on this journey back to our stars.

Jin Synth, a DJ, musician, and sound artist based in London, blends various textural and experimental analogue noise elements into her music. She plays synthesisers, modular, and a variety of microphones for field recording. During her live performances, Jin seeks to create an abstract, meditative atmosphere for her audience by freely improvising with her set-up. Recently, she has devoted herself to the field of sonic art and is constructing her own instruments and DIY microphones in order to produce unique sounds.
