It’s one of the best kept secrets of the Indonesian archipelago.

Hidden away on a pop album inspired by The Police, lies ‘Licik’, a deep vocoder funk workout lasting over nine minutes. It’s the first recorded Indonesian song to use the vocoder in such a way.

‘Licik’ is a hauntingly unique track and a testament to the quality of some of the best music the archipelago has to offer. Friends 82, consisting of Delly Rollies, Norman Rachman and the vocoder wizard Harry Sabar, wrote and recorded the track on the spot back in 1981.

The B-side pays tribute to the original song, with a re-contextualisation of the original by Jakarta-born, Bali-based multi-instrumentalist Dea Barandana.

Fully licensed from the songwriter and living legend Harry Sabar.

The record comes in a custom die cut sleeve with printed inner sleeve and a four page insert with extensive liner notes and photos.

Gaël dug into the cassette archive and came up with a trilogy of mixtapes. 

In his first mix he found that the common denominator were the Indonesian AOR vibes or, Instrumentalia Populer and other jazz inspired pop-not-pop songs. Join Gaël aka @pala_g as he sets the tone for these ‘rooms of nostalgia songs’ or Lagu2 Ruang Rindu.

Picture yourself over at your family for the weekend, in case of Sekan’s family Oma and Tante would be in the kitchen cooking, Opa is playing records and cd’s in the living room of famous Indonesian and Moluccan bands and bands from friends. He’s walking in and out of the garden smoking his pipe. All the nieces and nephews are playing on the field nearby and what we're all actually waiting for is that moment when somebody yells that the food is ready. Afterwards we hang out in the living room, listening to and playing or making music. The essence of having a good time, captured in this mix.

The picture of the cover is taken from Sekan’s personal family photo album. It’s taken in the guest house in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. Where his family arrived at in 1962 after fleeing Indonesia. They would have slametans (diners and dances) with all the other families living in the other rooms. Cooking food, listening to music and dancing the night away.

Jiwa Jiwa Cassette Mix Vol. 1 - Lagu2 Ruang Rindu

The second in this tape series is featured around the almighty guitar. Early versions of the instrument found their way to Indonesia in the 16th Century, during Portuguese colonial times: the Cavaquinho and Braguinha (the ancestors of the modern Ukulele). Starting in the nineteenth century, the use of guitars became more widespread due to their practicality and accessibility (especially in wartime). Rather than imitating pre-existing uses of the instrument, the guitar was incorporated into numerous local musical expressions such as lagu rakyat (national folk songs), lagu pop (pop songs, lagu gereja (church songs), dangdut, kroncong, Langgam, and many more.

The guitar is deeply rooted in the musical histories and popular cultures of Indonesia and its diaspora. They continue to facilitate valuable intergenerational exchanges - upholding cultural traditions as they are brought into new contexts. Here in the Netherlands, there’s this stereotypical image of Indo-Europeans who always have a guitar around the house, which probably all relates back to the hayday of Indorock and all the family bands that sprung up from everywhere. I guess this image is also applicable for Moluccan people since Gaël (@pala_g ) who created this mimx, his dad, And his grandfather all have and play the guitar, as does Sekan and his father too.

Currently there is a different picture from this same photo series on display in the ‘Revolusi’ exhibition Rijksmuseum. 

Which reminds us that will soon share some highlights from the Rijksmuseum talkshow Sekan attended to showcase Jiwa Jiwa but also give critical notes on the Revolusi exhibit and current affairs within the cultural institutions, which are also a reflection of bigger current societal problems.

17 Augustus, the day on which Indonesians try to spend time with their loved ones. On this so called Independence day the people celebrate, play games and reminisce. The bad news is, it's never done, you have to keep fighting for your independence. Days like this usually go by as a cliche. Nostalgic moments, dwelling on the old days. It’s good to look back, but do you learn from it? You need to… in order to move forward. The people in charge with different agendas can't answer what we’re supposed to do for this country, which most people see as a paradise, not only the tourists… Don’t take it for granted this paradise we live in. Keep checking in with yourself if you think what’s happening right now is for the good, and if it is sustainable. We love this country and we don’t want to sell it to the highest bidder. Celebrate this independence not only today, but everyday and think about how we can help and educate each other in creating a better place not only in Indonesia, but around the world. For this occasion we present to you a t-shirt which uses “Mooi Indië” paintings as it’s backdrop. Something Michiel Sekan (Jiwa Jiwa) is very familiar with. You see them all around the houses of Indischen in Holland. He himself as a Indisch descent is all familiar with seeing things from different angles. You have you’re Indonesian or Indische side and your Dutch side which are in constant conflict with each other. For the last Red Light Radio residency show I invited Uzair Sawal from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to share the decks with me for 2 hours. Playing mostly Malay tracks which are spoken in Bahasa Melayu which is the root of Bahasa Indonesia. We had some interesting talks on our different perspectives on history, music culture and how it's seen from an Eastern vs. Western point of view. Uzair also runs a great low key venue called Fono, so if you are ever in KL make sure to go there!
